MONTREAT, N.C. – Montreat College softball opened its 2019 campaign with a pair of doubleheaders in the southeast this weekend, splitting the series with Brewton-Parker on Friday and going 0-2 against RV University of South Carolina – Beaufort on Saturday.

"It was a great team effort Friday for basically our first real day outside since October," said head coach Heather Maston. "Tori Hill was dominant at the plate going 4-4 in game one. Josie Harris came in to close out two games on the weekend, and shut the offense down in both outings. Defense was solid for most of the weekend. We hit a snag in the third inning of our first game with USCB Saturday morning, but recovered to finish out the game and came out strong in game two."

Brewton-Parker

G1 (Montreat 6 – Brewton-Parker 1):

The Cavs had their best plate performance of the weekend in game one, pounding 13 hits in a 6-1 season opening win against the Barrons. Montreat was led offensively by Victoria Hill who went 4-for-4 with an RBI. Bree Powell, Mikki Shelton, and Ashlyn Vickers each had a pair of hits as well.

The seventh inning proved to be very productive for Montreat. The Cavs were able to force a few errors and plate four runners, sparked by Aly Woody's single that knocked in two to give her squad a comfortable lead late in the game.

Cailin Warner got the win on the mound giving up five hits, no earned runs, and retiring four batters in five innings pitched before Josie Harris entered the game in relief.

The Cavs produced seven innings of errorless softball, and were led defensively by Abby Swilley and Ashlyn Vickers who each had five put outs.

G2 (Brewton-Parker 6 – Montreat 0):

The Barrons answered in game two, forcing two errors and plating two runs in the first inning. They would go on to score a pair in both the second and fourth innings to take the game 6-0.

Mikki Shelton provided two of Montreat's three hits in the game. She also had two stolen bases and a pair of put outs.

Allison Moody started the game on the mound and recorded a strikeout before Charlie Smith came in to finish the game, retiring a trio of batters in her two-inning appearance.

USCB

G1 (USCB 9 – Montreat 0):

With the exception of the third inning that saw eight Sandsharks cross the plate, the Cavs put on a strong defensive performance against RV USCB in game one.

At the plate, the middle of the lineup registered all three hits for Montreat as Bree Powell and Marissa Romeo singled in the second inning and Victoria Hill singled up the middle in the fourth.

Starting pitcher Cailin Warner suffered her first loss of the season while recording two strikeouts in her four innings.

G2 (USCB 6 – Montreat 0):

Montreat recorded six hits in game two, but left six runners on base in the game as the Cavs weren't able to push any runners across the plate.

Kelsey Nolasco batted 2-for-3 with four put outs from behind the plate. Victoria Hill picked up another hit to finish the weekend with six total. Mikki Shelton, Bree Powell, and Hailey Penrose rounded out the batting for the Cavs with a hit each.

"We've got a lot to build on, but all in all, we were pleased with what we saw from the team this weekend and are excited to hit the field Wednesday with Mars Hill," said Coach Maston.
