BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. – The Cavaliers took to Roxy Hines Memorial Softball Field for the first time in 2019 on Wednesday as they split a doubleheader with Appalachian Athletic Conference opponent Columbia College. The squad stranded 10 runners to drop game one, 2-1, in extra innings before bouncing back with a 7-3 win in game two. Montreat currently sits at 6-4 in the AAC (15-15 overall).

"We've got to find a way to continue to play our game and not play to the level of our opponents. We have to come out ready each day," said head coach Heather Maston.

Game One: Columbia 2, Montreat 1 (8 Innings)
Montreat scattered eight hits throughout game one but could not execute, stranding 10 runner that included leaving the bases loaded in the second inning.

The Koalas would get on the board first in the fourth inning before Ashlyn Vickers tied things up for the Cavs in the sixth by driving in Destiny Munoz on a single to center. After a scoreless seventh, the game went into extra innings where Columbia scored the winning run in the top of the eighth.

Vickers and Vanessa Bartkewicz each had a multi-hit effort in the game, and Cailin Warner had a quality start on the mound with three strikeouts, no walks, and just one run on three hits in five innings.

Game Two: Montreat 7, Columbia 3
Columbia opened game two with a 2-0 lead off of a two-run homer in the top of the first, but the Cavs responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. Mikki Shelton and Liana Elliot set Munoz up for a two-RBI double before Abby Swilley knocked Munoz in with a groundout to short.

Montreat extended its lead in the fourth when Victoria Hill doubled to left and later stole home to go up 4-2.

The Cavs pushed across three more runs in the fifth, the first of the inning coming from Munoz who was knocked in on a single to short from Bartkewicz. Shortly after, Kelsey Nolasco doubled to left-center to drive home Swilley and Graclyn Green. Columbia would get another run back in the seventh inning on Montreat's lone error of the game.

Bartkewicz put up another multi-hit performance in game two, finishing the day 4-for-5 at the plate with two walks. Munoz was also solid at the plate in game two, hitting 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI.

Starting pitcher Charlie Smith improved to 8-5 on the mound, striking out three batters and allowing no walks, six hits, and two runs in five innings.

Up Next: The Cavs are right back at it this weekend with a pair of conference matchups as Tennessee Wesleyan visits on Friday and Bluefield on Saturday. First pitch for both doubleheaders is set for 4 p.m.
