MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. – Montreat softball recorded yet another Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader split Tuesday after defeating conference rival Milligan 2-1 in game one followed by a 4-2 deficit in game two. Montreat is sitting even in AAC play (11-11) with two conference series remaining in the regular season.
"We bounced back well from Sunday, but we're still trying to find a way to finish a doubleheader," said head coach Heather Maston. "We will hit well one game but not as well the next, so we have to find consistency at the plate."
Game One: Montreat 2, Milligan 1
After a leadoff single up the middle in the top of the second, Abby Swilley advanced to third on a double by Ashlyn Vickers before crossing the plate on a 6-3 groundout from Ronnie Ellis to get her squad on the board.
Milligan got a run back in the fourth, but Cailin Warner opened the fifth inning with a leadoff double deep down the left field line before Hailey Penrose, pinch running for Warner, was able to take advantage of a Buffs error to score the game-winning run.
In addition to her double, Warner tossed a complete game for a quality start with five hits, one run, two walks, and a strikeout in seven innings.
Kelsey Nolasco had a strong performance defensively with seven putouts and two assists from third base.
Game Two: Milligan 4, Montreat 2
Mikki Shelton's leadoff single in the top of the third eventually set Swilley up for an RBI-single to tie things up at 1. Vickers once again pushed Swilley to third on a double before Victoria Hill recorded her second hit of the game with a single up the middle to knock in Swilley for a 2-1 lead.
Unfortunately that lead wouldn't last as the Buffs ripped a 2-run homer and closed the scoring in the game with an RBI-single in the bottom of the inning.
The Cavs had six total hits and left seven runners on base in the game.
