Pitching and Pitchers Discussion Sports Goggles/Glasses questions

I have a DD that is a 10u pitcher and she wears glasses. Unfortunately, with only being 10, she is not quite old enough or responsible enough for contacts. So, we are looking into getting her some sports goggles or glasses that are made with the safety glass that won't break. Especially since she is a pitcher.

This is all new to us, so I'm reaching out to get a little advise from those who may have experience with this. Insurance only pays for one pair, so I'm trying to make the right choice.
The first question is would you go with the kind that looks more like a pair of sunglasses or go with the actually goggles that have the strap that goes around the head?
The second question is would you go with the tinted or regular lenses? I'm kind of torn because the tinted would be nice when its sunny out. But we do live in Ohio and those days aren't of an abundance. haha. And you obviously wouldn't want tinted when she is working inside all winter.

I appreciate any feedback I can get. Thanks in advance for your guidance.

Hi SoftballDad. Glad you brought this up. This has become an issue for me in the past week too. My 10u DD pitcher got glasses this week too. She pitched in her lesson this week with her glasses and mask on. It seemed to work out pretty good. She hit with them on under her helmet too. I think it will be a matter of getting used to wearing them. At this point, we are probably going to stick with what she has and not buy any additional. I, of course, pleaded for a bad a$$ pair of old school REC specs but the wife put a stop to that.

This must be a 10 year old problem, because we have the same concerns. Last year she wore her glasses when she hit, but this year she's going to be pitching so I feel like we need a better option. We are going to ask about contacts and see how that goes at her next appointment in January. If that's not an option, we need to look for a better alternative than her regular glasses. Any input would be great.

Daughters eyesight is ok. (Knock on wood) but my sons was another story. As a catcher he had some of the same issues, especially fielding with a mask and an added issue of having to tear it off from time to time. Personally we never perferred contacts. The game is played on dirt and dust and both can make contacts more harnful than beneficial to their game. (i.e. IRRITATION). As stated no matter what you decide, it will take time to get used to them but, we found that a good pair of light sensitive, scratch proof full band sports goggles worked best. And Weekend, they are available in Kurt Rambis style! Sidenote: We shopped around and Sams Club Optical had the best price if you dont have insurance.

I had the same issue with my daughter. What we did was get my daughter daily contacts. She wore them for practices, games and each day of a tournament. In the beginning my wife had to help or put them in for her but by mid-season she was able to do it herself. This way she didn't have to maintain them and after a practice, game or end of the day of a tournament she just threw them away.

Thanks, I was kind of leaning towards the full band goggles. The real key will be finding a pair that my DD will wear. haha

That's not a bad idea too. I'll have to run that idea by my wife. Thanks

My oldest dd wears glasses. For softball we got her a pair of rec specs with the transition lenses and she loved them. The rec specs have the band that wraps around her head to keep them from falling off and the glasses are more like goggles in a way that they are closer to her face. The transition lens is a clear lens that gets darker as the sun gets brighter but stays clear when it isn't sunny. We opted for the shatterproof glass as well.....just incase.

10? she can wear contacts... If my hockey knucklehead son could put them it at 10, I'm sure your DD can too.;).DD work glasses pitching till 12 y/o. Since she was always wore a mask, her regular glasses were fine.

Koreans play hockey? Get confused with short track speed skating?

If you get contacts she will still need to have a pair of glasses in her bag. The dirt/sand/grit will get in her eyes and a full weekend of games may be to much. You do not want her scratching her cornea.

I believe that ALL glasses are safety lenses so there isn't much to be gained there from sport glasses. The frames are what is the safety part but if behind a face mask then it is of little consequence. Any pair of glasses must sit and not bounce on her nose. I always had her eyes checked before the season and then could get glasses with the right prescription. Their eyes can change dramtically in just a few months.

A word of caution; hard earned form dealing with young women at the high school level (and I suspect ten year olds). If she thinks that she looks dorky or unfashionable she will leave the glasses in her bag even if she is as blind as a bat and goes O for 20 without them. Make sure she is excited to wear them before YOU decide what she'll wear.
