State softball tourney moves to Akron (maybe)

I was sad to see it moved, but I am from Ashland....loved going over to watch top notch softball, and donna williams does a fabulous job. I probably will not make that drive to akron unless my daughter's teams makes it to state. My complaint is about the location of sectionals etc. Ashland had to drive to Tiffin (over an hour) to play Mansfield Sr and Mansfield Madison!!! That's just crazy...what is up with that, someone try to make sense of that. We're fifteen minutes from each other, there had to be a field somewhere closer, and they have no concession stands, no close restrooms, really not the best field I've seen, What goes into these decisions?

There are times that only one venue bids on a district or a regional tournament. ?It has happened in volleyball where the local school with the lowest ceiling (a definite problem in VB!) is the only one who bid to have the sectionals/district. ? Not everyone clamours to host these events. ?Sometimes OHSAA has no option but to take the only bid for the earlier play offs.

Obviously not the problem with the states, but might explain why the longer distance to travel earlier in the tournaments.

Ohlovessteelers: Firestone Stadium is not at the University of Akron. It is a wonderful historical facility that is perfect for hosting this tournament!

Picklemom,
If you read my post, I don't have a problem with Firestone. I know it well. It's regionals that are always at too small of a venue (U of A). We always thought they should be at Firestone or some place with a lot of seats - not U of A.

No matter where it is, even Columbus, somebody could have a long drive. Cincinnati to Akron is probably only 40-45 minutes longer than Geneva to Columbus.

i must admit i was disapointed when i heard that the tournament had been moved out of ashland. not only because the tournament has only ever been held here, also because i live about 35 minutes away ;). however, the distance travelled by other schools and teams that live across the state is some what more of a travel. but softball isnt the only sport to be in an inconvenient place, the volleyball state finals are held in Dayton. What I am saying is it might not be "fair" but thats how it is, firestone stadium is an excellent facility and i am sure that finals will be just as memorable as they have in the past.

Being involved in sports in general, requires driving! ?It stinks that the tourney is no longer in Ashland as that is a very central area for most of us, but I'm sure Akron will do a fine job hosting the tournament. ?Chicoflip was right, as long as the area has nice fields & adequate hotel accomodations & restaurants, a little driving isn't a huge deal. ?The problem is the added expense for all those in attendance. ?Another hit to the wallet! ?

Why do you think we have tailgate parties and cook-outs at tourneys, simply softball 06? ?Its so us "over-spent and under-appreciated" travel-ball parents can afford to feed you "over-worked and under-nourished" softball girls! ?Have to keep your strength up, ya' know! ?Nothing does that better than a burnt hot-dog and stale tater-chips!

Last year, two Clinton County teams played each other in the Div IV football in the first round of the playoffs and the game was moved 30 plus miles away when only a couple of creeks and a few cornfields separated the two schools (actually border one another) and Wilmington College or High School was available. Lost revenues for both schools from walk up attendence from county residents. These two teams had played each other in football since 1963 every year for the "Cider Barrel" and that year had not due to scheduling difficulty and then meet in the playoffs and one was undefeated .
The almighty dollar wins again........ ...... .... and again .......... centrally located is best for state tournaments and schools do get comped for their teams appearing. I think the comping starts at the Regional level.

I am originally from ashland and am not sure what Akron you are talking about. 20 min more like 40- Woster takes 20 I now live in SW Ohio- Cincy and think it is wrong for them to have moved it from a venue that has hosted it for all those years. Couldn't have been a more perfict sopt Ashland right in the heart of the state.
