State Tournament Observations

The NB-Crestview state semi game was my first experience at Ashland. ?I had talked to others who had attended games in the past and from those conversations I was ready to be unimpressed. However, I did find the venue, except for the location of the restroom facilities, to be pretty nice. ?I do have some things that I feel could be improved.

$2.00 for a bottle of water after I paid $7.00 to get in is a little steep.

I doubt that any high school allows smoking at any of their venues any more but I saw a diamond official in a high profile situation with a cigarette in his hand. I have nothing against smoking but there is a time and place for everything.

I saw a few men walking around with OHSAA staff tee shirts that looked like they had just stepped off the back of a garbage truck and some of their language was very colorful. ?

Our umpire, Susan Mani, called, what I thought, a very good game. ?But, her ability was over shadowed by her actions between pitches. ?She stopped the game at least 5 times to tell the local media to move their equipment. ?This was not a problem in earlier games and if she had a problem with it she should have addressed it before the game. ?Also she did not asked them in a very respectful manner. ?If we want the media to cover this great game we need to work with them. ?She also stopped the pitcher after she got her sign numerous times because the scoreboard did not agree witht her count - it really disrupted the flow of the game.

Ms. Mani also warned one of the pitchers not to bring her hands together until she pointed to her. ?I have never heard this rule before but I could be wrong. ?But she refused to go to the mound to explain what she didn't like. ?This pitcher is a sophomore with only 2 years of pitching experience and was not sure what she was doing wrong until a coach approached Ms. Mani between innings.

All in all, it was a great experience. ?I will be back next year even if we are not lucky enough to represent our region. ?But these are a few things that could have been done better.
