Just had a question concerning two great softball organizations. The first being the MC Madness. Word on the streets is the organization folded due to financial problems (possible theft). Can anyone confirm this information to be correct? There are other rumors as to where the president of this organization may end up within the softball world. Again can anyone confirm this?

Next is the Ohio Ice 12u Orange team. Will this organization continue to allow 3 daddy coaches to coach their 12u team. It is apparent that the new 10u Ice coach has made it clear in his tryout message that his team won't be coached by a dad. Sounds like he took exception to the daddy coaches from the previous Ice team.

Let me confirm the "WORD ON THE STREET". Yes, it is true. The M.C. Madness Inc. softball organization will not field teams this season. I started this organization seven years ago with a few teams. It grew quickly and we had as many as 14 teams, but lately we have had around nine or ten teams. During those early years our teams were primarily coached by non parents and we had some success. As the years have gone on, we have lost most of our volunteer, non-parent coaches for various reasons. This year, we had nine teams. Three of those teams were coached by non-parent coaches and two of those teams were quite successful. One of those teams was mine. I had three coaches tell me they were not returning for various reasons, so that meant I would have to find more coaches, but all I had were three parents volunteer instead. That is when I started taking a closer look at what the organization had evolved into over the course of the last seven years. We no longer have the quality of teams that I am accustomed to having. I took into consideration that the M.C. Madness was built on the quality of teams not the quantity of teams we were putting on the field, and decided to shut it down. It takes many people to do what we do when running an organization. At the end of the day, two people cannot run an organization this size without a great deal of sacrifice. Our families suffer. Our own personal team suffers from spending time dealing with the other teams' problems, and our health suffers. One of the two people running this organization has decided to move out of state to enjoy warmer weather and save his marriage...too late for me that ship sailed 7 years ago. That was the final factor that lead to the decision to shut down the Madness. So my reasons for shutting it all down was: 1) Lack of non-parent coaching...too much Daddy ball. 2) lack of quality teams. 3) Lack of help and support to effectively run the organization. After reading post after post about Daddy ball and how softball is watered down, I thought I would do the right thing and put an end to it by not fielding teams this season.
Now let's deal with accusation of theft. Our by laws are set up through our 501 c3 to have checks and balances. The president has no access to any of the money in the accounts. After I contacted the coaches about our decision, the first question from the coaches was about the money in their team budget. Our coaches get an itemized monthly budget from our treasurer.....which did a fantastic job of keeping everyone informed about their balance. We are currently cleaning out each team's account to reimburse each team for the money left over in the accounts. We are waiting for receipts in order to do it properly. Every team's account will be emptied and given back to the parents of that team if they were in the black. We are trying to get this done as soon as possible because our taxes are due by August 31. The general fund will also be used to award our seniors and juniors the participation and achievement awards we give out each November. Applications for those awards were sent out to those that are eligible and are due by August 15 so checks can be written by August 31. We are rewarding several athletes for their commitment to the organization over the past seven years through the process set up in our bylaws. This will bring our operating fund down to a balance that will allow us to pay our taxes and pay out the next two years of participation and achievement awards to those athletes that are eligible to receive the awards through the application process. The organization is financially sound and that had nothing to do with shutting down. Our bills are all paid and we looking into a couple more reimbursement issues to families and we will be set to pay future taxes and awards.
The next issue you spoke about. Yes, I am now coaching one team in another organization. I will be coaching the Lasers Orange team this season. The opportunity to coach in a quality organization where I will be focused on one team and one team only is refreshing. I look forward to the challenge.

I have been doing this for many years and I think I have built a reputation as a good guy that loves softball and loves to teach and coach it. I have great pride in what I accomplished over the past seven years as the M.C. Madness leader. We have sent 47 girls on to play in college over the last 4 years, so I must have been doing something right. It pains me to read such harsh accusations about about me or my organization. I don't know who you are or what your motive is, but by posting what you did clearly shows that you are trying to stir the pot. You have 4 posts in all, so you must have created this username to hide behind. Maybe you are an unhappy parent of a Madness player, or coach, but this is not the place to do this. If you really want to know more about what I am doing, please feel free to call me at 216-344-0892, e-mail me at saundersge@aol.com or pm me through this media.

I once heard..."If you are going to stir the %#@$ pot, you should be ready to lick the spoon!" lol

Nice post, Gary. It's a shame you actually have to lay out your side but today's day and age poster often requires one to defend their actions. Accusations of theft are absolutely extreme and shouldn't be allowed by a person with 4 posts and no history of actually know wth they are talking about.
I've seen the Madness teams over the years and they usually put a quality product on the field. I also thought you all did a nice job allowing women coaches to run a few of your teams. IMO, who better to coach the game than those that actually played it. It's a trend you see picking up steam in a lot of top organizations.

Good luck to you and your new team. Has there been any discussions on where your ASA qualifier may slide to?

That is a fantastic accomplishment and it is a shame someone tried to sully that with an anonymous post on a website.

Great post Gary. Even though my daughter has never played for MCM, I have always looked upon the organization and the leadership as first class. Best of luck to you in your new role. I'm sure you will enjoy all of the extra time.

We played for MC Madness this year, and we don't have one bad thing to say about the organization, everything was communicated to us by the coaches and staff. There were NEVER any questions about improprieties within this organization, Gary and staff did a good job and we are very disappointed that it has come to such an abrupt end, due to a couple people "stirring the pot".
Gary, best of luck to both Mark and you on your new endeavor with the Lasers.

I had planned on posting this earlier but now that someone is questioning a couple of good friends I have to say my peace. My daughter has been with Mc Madness for three years and loved every minute of it, as I did. Most people don't realize the time that Mark and Gary put into running things. I helped whenever I could, often being aggravated at the lack of help from others, when you are welcomed to Madness you were told you are expected to help with the Tournament and The Night at The Races fundraiser. Many do not step up, and it happens with all teams, we had field duty this year and while some parents worked for hours some sat and watched. I will really miss watching two of the BEST coaches I've ever seen coach their team or having our team included with the practice with the Madness SS team, the girls loved it. Good luck to Mark and Gary with the lucky Lasers team that they are coaching. These guys didn't have any daughters that were playing softball, they were doing this for the love of the game. Proud to say I will be friends for life with these gentleman. It's nice to see so many other people supporting them.

With both organizations, MC Madness and Ice, it's not anyone's business about what is going on but the individual's involved. I would have peace of mind, in knowing my child's team wasn't involved with any of it, and hope the best for all teams involved. My biggest pet peeve with softball, is gossip, all other aspects I enjoy.

My DD had the pleasure of playing for Coach Gary at BW, and he is a good man and an excellent coach. Best wishes, Gary, with the Lasers, and thanks for taking the time on here to lay out everything.

Gary thank you for all you have done for OH softball over the years and continue to do! My daughter benefited from your organization after she had played her first year of college ball. She was still eligible for 18u and played with one of your teams in some OH tournaments and then at ASA/USA in AL. Our experience was classy people and class organization!... she still connects with some of the girls from that team. We all know the sacrifices you would have had to make to enjoy the success with MC Madness that you did. Certainly no need to explain yourself to anyone on here. Best of luck to you!

Let me first say I have no dog in the MC Madness fight. I understand the organization is responsible for sending many girls to the next level. I personally did not accuse the organization of theft, however I did repeat it on an open forum which will be questioned by many. Did I do the right thing in doing so? I think the answer to that by most will be, HELL NO! But with that said Mr. Saunders response and those that have come on here to back him should put an end to all the BS that goes on in the softball world. His track record speaks for itself and he owes no one any explanation. The one he gave proved a point.

On to the Ohio Ice Orange team. A person doesn't normally post about two different organizations at the same time and I understand that. Again, no dog in this fight but I was scrolling through tryout information when I came across the Ohio Ice tryout page. I found it interesting that the new 10u coach would state the following.
"Ohio Ice Blue 10u 2016 Home Page . I have no kids on the team, which means your child gets an equal playing field. There is no" daddy-ball" on my teams. ALL POSITIONS ARE OPEN" Seemed unusual I have never had a problem with dad coaches at 10u/12u/14u level. Without them who knows what travel ball becomes? Since my initial post I have received several private messages supporting the head coach of the 12u Ice. I guess I was more surprised to know that a team within the Ice organization had more than just a handful of daddy coaches.

I would like to issue an apology to Coach Saunders and wish him luck in all of his future endeavors. I would also like to wish the Ohio Ice organization the best of luck as well!

Saunders is with Lasers Orange, 16u team. You keep mentioning Ice Orange, that is an entirely different organization, not to mention age bracket!

I don't see where PLAYBALL started anything.. All I see in the OP were questions asking about Madness and Ice Orange. Could they have been worded better? yes.

GOTDIRT, playball asked 2 separate question with one not having anything to do with the other.

The Ice Blue coach has been coaching for sometime with no child in the sport. That's always his tag line every year, that he has no kids playing and therefore the risk of daddy ball is non existent. That has nothing to do whatsoever with the 12u Ohio Ice Orange or any other team in the organization. I assume it's just Ice Blue's way of pulling in players who have had daddy ball issues.

Copying and pasting four pages of Facebook conversations doesn't do anything to strengthen a case. The sewage there is no different than here on OFC...
