The Stingrays Gold will be forming a new team and will be holding a workout in the Ohio area over the Christmas break. This team will be made up mostly of players from Ohio, Florida and maybe a couple other crazies thrown in. This team will play a very competitive showcase schedule but it will not be a road warrior type team. The roster will not be birth year specific. We will try to fill it with high school age players that are skill level appropriate. We will carry around 14 players and will look for solid rotations at positions.

This is an existing team that is expanding to include players from other areas that have goals and expectations like ours. We are fortunate to already be invited to most of the top level showcases east of the Mississippi - and we will continue to play in the events that match our players college playing desires. If this interests you please feel free to contact me through this site or at our email address. It should be a fun ride.

Go to Thread Tools, then bump thread. Unfortunately if you are using the ForumRunner app there is no TT, so you would have to do it the manual way.

Might it be a little late to be looking for the caliber of players you are expecting??

Not looking for an entire roster. This is an existing team that is already playing in this circuit. The "New" is the expansion of the roster to include Ohio (and other) based players. Sometimes you just never now which players are looking for a different type situation.

I understand that Mark, but in the middle of December you would more than likely have to "poach" a player from an existing team to make this happen. I hate to use that word, and wish you the best of luck, but would hate to see players start jumping ship for greener pastures.

Is this really any different than other teams still looking for players on this forum? My dd's team is looking for a player and we are by no means trying to poach a player from another team. Personally, I do not take this thread as an attempt to poach players...just a team trying to fill a roster.

I think there certainly is a difference, and one that parents and coaches should keep in mind. Things have really changed over the years and teams looking for players multiple times a year is not only commonplace - see the list of teams looking - but it is a necessity. At this age the fall season has grown into a full blown recruiting season. And because of that expectations also change. These type of teams might have players that are on the roster but have recently signed or verballed to their college choices - they might not want continue on the circuit full bore. Players on teams might have decided the travel and/or level of competition on their existing team doesn't match what their desires are. It doesn't make any of these situations bad, it just means that teams and players find themselves looking around.

Poaching is a different animal. Poaching is also a part of the sport - whether we like it or not. Poaching simply is when a coach or administrator targets a player on a team specifically and tries to recruit them to leave their existing team. Usually in season. We all see it - like it or not.

In my opinion you will see more and more older teams holding tryouts/workouts multiple times a year. Before there was an actual fall season this wasn't needed. Teams set their rosters in August, practiced a bit in the fall, played some indoor tournaments in the winter and fired it up in the spring. Now there is a full blown fall season at all ages. I am not sure if the same tryout/workout thought process will hold true in the future.

WWolff - That is a very tough question. The number is fluid. It honestly will depend on the players interests. Ultimately I would like to have close to a 50/50 split - but we will field the best team regardless of location.

I don't want to take anything away from Mark and what he and the Stingrays are trying to do. Feel it may be an excellent opportunity for the right player.

But to answer your question Len, I think they are totally different situations. My personal opinion...most teams on here that are still looking are going to be looking for players that had teams disband, or possibly that "diamond in the rough" who has decided to take their game to the next level, not looking for players jumping ship. Again my own opinion...I just don't see the caliber of player Mark is looking for just sitting out there waiting for this type of opportunity...more than likely they are on another team already and would have to leave that team.

But with that being said, if I had a girl on my team that wanted to make this step I would with some reluctance give it my blessing and move forward.

As has been stated earlier the workout will be on the 27th from 3:00 - 5:00. The interest is very good and I think there will be a very good mix of players attending. I am not looking for a huge number of players to attend - but those interested in playing a very exciting schedule and understand the committment needed to do so are encouraged to contact me so we can talk about specifics.

I hope everyone had a great Christmas. Hopefully the weather holds out for a couple more days. Whenever I get asked the question about how I can handle the heat of the summer in Orlando I just try to relay what the weather is like here this week.

We have a pretty nice group of players coming out on Thursday. I am very interested in seeing how thing fit together. Should be fun!!
