Strange complaint bush league I think....

With all the discussions on here about bush league tactics. Last weekend we were playing in PA and had a strange complaint by the other teams coach. One of our pitchers was pitching with the same glove she has used all spring (no changes). The other coach complained because the strings on her glove weren't tied (now mind you they are just your ordinary leather ties, not a funky color or anything) and they were distracting his players. So the ump went out to the mound and made her tie them. What would rule would back up that? I believe that he knew it would rattle her (which it did, granted she sould shake it off but she is 12 and she let it get to her).

I guess you do see it all in kids athletics! Just let them play!

If something is judged to be distracting, the umpire has the power to make the player correct it.

But, just because a coach complains about something, that doesn't mean the umpire is compelled act on it. If his complaint has no merit the umpire is free to dismiss it. Whether or not something is truly distracting is a determination to be made by the umpire, not the coach.

If something is really distracting, I would hope that I addressed it well before a coach ever had to bring it up. And, if I have not addressed it, I have obviously judged it to not be distracting!

As we always say, "Softball is a game played by kids and is orchestrated and run by adults and adults do not like to loose to other kids and especially other adults!"

Hitter sounds right! I just don't see why the glove hand was any focus.....the ball is what they are to be watching not her other hand that she drops to her side during windup.....If a batter is watching her glove hand while batting I think they need to go back to rec ball. That glove is only in the picture for a split second. So many people taking advantage of girls emotions to win a game, that is low. Shame on them. Oh well.

Well put and how sad.

Goofy situation but GREAT learning experience for pitcher. Remind her how goofy us adults are and the importance of mental toughness and she'll be better off for the next time the other coach doesn't like the way her hair is tied. :)

Is it any different than the well timed cheers and shrieks in the middle of a pitcher's motion? Or the hundreds of other ways that grown adults try to get into these girls heads. Its sad, really. It is part of the maturing process, sometimes, to learn how to overcome these bush league tactics. What you need to tell your DD is that this is really a compliment to her, in that they feel like they can't beat you unless they try to mess with her head.
