Need some input...

? ? When your pitcher comes to you and says they would like to wear sunglasses on the mound because of the bright days, dirt being kicked up, windy days and so on what do you say to her? ?Are the glasses an OK thing on the mound? ?How about when their up to bat also? ?Should they just put on the paint and suck it up?

? ? Certain lens colors..good and some bad? ?

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Thanks

the glasses help for all the reasons mentioned - have seen numerous girls use them - there is a UV lens that also has some anti-glare properties that work very well in bright sunlight

3's,

We allow our pitchers to wear them if they wish. Sunglasses may have actually saved the vision of one our pitchers in 2005 at the GAPSS. She had them on and took a line drive to the right eye and the glasses took the force instead of her eye. (Our pitchers and 3rd baseladies now wear masks).

We have no restrictions on wearing them on the mound or at bat. ?

Not a fan of sunglasses on an infielder, especially the corners or pitcher because of the possibility of a ball shattering them and causing damage to the eyes, but it's also not something I'll forbid. Other than that the only issue could be if the umpire thought that they were to distracting to the batter.

My dd uses the Easton sunglasses that are shatter-resistant. She uses them all the time. Hitting, pitching, catching, and 2nd base. It has really helped her game on sunny days.

Thank You Fastpitch Parents. ?I could just go to Easton's Web site to find a pair of those shatter resistant glasses right?

Shatter resistent is great. I think that amber is the color recommended. I know that amber is the color of contact lenses recommended for softball.

An Umpire at a tourney this year made my dd take hers off while on the mound. Said it was illeagal unless they were prescription, or saftey rated. She has wore them for 3 years and this was the only time this has happened????

Wow, I would have been pretty upset at the Umpire on that one! I could maybe understand the color distraction like the BearMay said, even though I don't actually think it distracts them.

Thanks for the lens color..Luvthegame.

haha i was talking 2 my eye docter about sunglasses not so long ago and he said that the brown lensed ones work best on a softball field cuz they reflect light the best and he also said to make sure that u get poleroid lenses

Re: Sunglasses or Not

Two points on sunglasses.

First - the umpire who made the pitcher remove glasses was completely off-base - unless the glasses were mirrored. Many of the sanctioning bodies specifically ban mirrored or reflective sunglasses on pitchers. If the glasses weren't mirrored, then the umpire has no authority do remove them.

We equipped several girls this year with shaded safety glasses - for about $2.50 per set of glasses. Sam's Club sells 12-packs of shaded safety glasses for about $26. I bought the pack and handed out glasses to girls who needed them. Several girls used them for games. We kept the extras for emergency use - when a girl forgot her set or broke her original pair. It worked pretty well and was inexpensive.

The reason you had never heard that before is that there is no such rule!

The bad news is that you had an umpire making up an imaginary rule.

The good news is that it apparently has only happened to you one time!

I work in the optical field and purchased a pair of Bolle sunglasses with a specific tint designed for softball or tennis. The tint is blue/green it's not super dark so it can be worn in any condition but also has a solid silver mirror coat for xtra glare protection. It makes anything optic yellow really stand out! The lenses are available in different frame styles. Really it's a matter of preference as far as this goes but make sure the lenses are made of polycarbonate to insure impact resistance. If you want more info I'll try to find a catalog. You could go to any place that sells Bolle sunglasses they should be able to get them I believe the lense is called the competevision series. Drop me a message if you need more info.
