Best wishes and prayers to her, it a very scary thing to have happen. We played a scrimmage on Wednesday in the snow, DD is a pitcher and did not ware her mask, she said she could not see. I was not to pleased to hear this due to the reason she could not see was the snow. I feel lucky something like this did not happen to her.
I hope this player makes a full recovery. It just takes one play to cause terrible injury that could effect you forever.

Best wishes to the family. I witnessed a line drive shot to a player a few years back and it was scary.
Deep down I hope the governing bodies make some changes as soon as possible before someone gets killed.

The new face guards are smaller and lighter than ever so common sense should come into play. jmho ;&

I echo the thoughts of her parents. I'd like to see more players wearing masks. I know of travel ball players that wear them in the summer but stop wearing them during school ball. The point of wearing protection is that you never know when an accident will happen.

I do think that face mask should be mandatory for 1st, 3rd and pitcher. It is for my team or the kid does not play one of those positions. To me it is not the kids or parents call to wear one it is the coaches call. Some might think I am a butt but you will not play for me without one, period. I like to win as much as anybody else but the safety of the player is first and for most.

My prayers are with this girl, family and friends in this time of need. Hoping you make a full recovery and playing the sport you love once again real soon.

God Bless,
Ohio Danger 13u Family

My thoughts go out to not only the young lady, but to her parents as well.
I am tired of "governing bodies" telling me what to do & not do. I feel it is the responsibility of the PARENTS to govern their kids.
Protective gear is available and affordable. I require my DD to wear it pitching and playing 3rd. She chooses to wear it at other times on her own.
From hearing the mother talk on the newsclip, I absolutely know she wishes she would have made her daughter wear a mask, and I promise you she will wear one in the future.
Are we so inept that we have to wait for some complete, anonymous stranger to tell us how to take care of our kids before we do it ourselves?? I think not.

I agree to an extent...but when the 'governing body' makes the decision you remove the idiot parent element. Be honest...how many girls DON'T wear a mask because dad thinks its for wimps or lacks machismo...or makes some stupid comment like "Finch doesn't wear one"?
Now, here's my question and I'm no doctor....but lets assume the player in question IS wearing a mask...would the force of the line shot that hit her still have the potential to cause the concussion that lead to her hospitalization? helmets don't prevent concussions so would the face mask had prevented one? I don't know, I'm just asking a question out loud.
For the record, my daughter is a catcher and plays 2nd and CF when not catching...and she wears a rip-it at all times when not behind the plate. DAD's orders.

None that I am aware of. I'm sure it happens but I've never heard it. Have you to a certain level of frequency?

Like Honor&Glory, my daughter won't play certain positions without a facemask even when in HS. It's my rule. I'm an "idiot parent", one that is fully in charge when it comes to things like that. Just like when my son had a partially torn "Tommy John" and the coach, against doctors orders and my explanations, put him on the mound. I took him off the mound, in as nice and respectful way that I could.

Thoughts and prayers to the young lady and her family.

We started our girls last year with masks and make them wear them when ever they are fielding. Practice, tossing the ball around and obviously in games. One week before the new masks arrived one of our girls got a bad bounce out of her glove and caught one in the face. Luckily she had her own mask prior to the team purchasing it for her.

We saw a young pitcher two years ago catch one in the the top of the mask. It still left a very big welt, but she was ok. I can't imagine what would of happened if she did not have a mask on.

This Sunday, my daughter was on the mound and got a line drive to her quad, just above the knee. Scared the **** me. I have put off buying the Evo Shield all winter, I am ordering it this weekend.

I had a 9U team a few years ago. I told the team I'd recommend them, but wouldn't force them. Then one of my pitchers took a line shot to her face. She was one of the few players that had them. However, after she took a shot to the face, ricocheted to her shoulder and came out with a bruised shoulder only. The results, all infielders bought one without me saying a word.

I simply don't understand why parents, coaches , and/or players don't make the girls wear them. It is simple stupid arrogance. My dd's first ab this year she about took the pitchers head off. Thank God she got her glove up to deflect the ball just in time cause she wasn't wearing any protective equipment. It just isn't worth the risk. I am not a supporter of more governing body involvement but as they sayin goes not even God can fix stupid.

Amen!! It is OUR responsibility to require our minor daughters to use protective equipment, not the coach's, school's or any other government body. Sounds like this young lady will be ok from reading the article...I will have my pitcher DD read it just to reiterate what is already pounded into her head...

I keep hearing college coaches look down upon girls who wear masks and if that's the case, so be it. My DD will play for a coach who wants her for her abilities and not one who is worried about whether she wears a mask or not. I do not make it mandatory for any of my players to wear masks, but I do highly suggest it for pitchers and corners.

I completely agree with the use of a facemask for pitchers and corner infielders, and our dd faithfully wears hers.

My question is : What type of feedback has people received from recruiters and college coaches about the use of facemasks ? I have heard that they frown on them for the older girls ( 16u & up ), but was wondering if anyone has actually heard this from a recruiter or college coach ?

WOW John, great minds think alike.;&

Prayers for this young lady and her family. Brain injury outcomes are unpredictable at best; hopefully they have the best possible results and a team of educators to help her at school when she returns.

I have 3 DDs. One took a softball to the face during practice her junior year, broke her nose and cheek bone. The second chose not to wear a seatbelt junior year and put her face thru a windshield. Both are fine now and are sophomores in college.

The youngest DD is a highschool freshman who chose to comply with our directive that she wear a mask when pitching or playing infield. However, her head coach does not want the girls wearing masks during practice stating he wants them to trust themselves and their abilities; he actually high-fives and compliments the girls for not doing what their parents want in regards to masks. The DD got hit in the face with a line drive earlier this week, luckily it was only a tooth thru the top lip and nothing more serious.

I spend a lot of time backing up coaches even when I don't agree with them because the kids need to learn how the big world works. BUT I won't bend when it comes to safety!!! He can call me if that's a problem.

One of my dd's was playing second for her school team last year and decided she was not going to wear her mask. I think it was a combination or another player giving her a hard time and some comments from coaches.
So, I took a little stroll by the head coaches Dad who was her assistant and politely said," you are about to lose a second basemen." He replied, "why", I said," if she doesn't have the mask on she doesn't play."
Needless to say, she wore the mask for the rest of the year and before someone can say it's not necessary for the second basemen. When dd's team went against a slapper or who they thought was slapper, they pulled the second and short up even with the pitcher. First scrimmage of the year, lefty comes up and they pull dd in and the girl triples into the outfield gap, that batter just solidified my stance on the mask.

I asked this of three highly respected Division 1 coaches at an NFCA Coaches College course over a year ago and there was a somewhat awkward tension in their responses. I came away thinking that it was at best at least an issue for those coaches. At the last course, however, I got a different response from former and present Division 1 coaches, so perhaps the college staffs are coming around.

As I've mentioned once in awhile on here, many years ago (I think it was 2003) I watched an Ohio pitcher take one back to the face in a tournament in Alabama. It was a SHOT hit by an extremely talented athlete. The hitter and her mom were in tears. I, as at that point a pitcher's mom, nearly vomited. Fortunately, the injury was so bad that the Birmingham hospital told the family that the plastic surgery could not be done until the swelling went down. I say "fortunately", because that meant the plastic surgery was done at OSU and within six weeks, there was only the faintest scar at the top of what had been a smashed cheek bone.

Ever since that day, I've felt that if a kid wants to wear a mask, that is her absolute right and as far as coaching goes, it would NEVER be an issue for me.

But old habits die hard. Even after seeing that injury, my DD completed her career without wearing a mask either in the circle or at 1st; she made it clear she didn't want a mask, and even to this day she might make some kind of soft crack when she sees players wearing them. Looking back, we should have required her to wear one, at least during HS/Travel Ball. We dodged the bullet.
