HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. The Northern Kentucky University softball team will be hosting its three-week Winter Academy for grades 4-12 on Jan. 11, 18, and 25, 2009 at Regents Hall on the NKU campus. NKU coaches and players will provide instruction in all aspects of fastpitch softball.
The academy will be broken into five separate one-hour sessions each week. There will be two separate Hitting Academies, which will take place each Sunday from 10-11 a.m. and from 1-2 p.m. The Hitting Academy will focus on hitting and bunting instruction, hitting circuit and base running techniques. Helmets and bats will be provided, but attendees may bring their own.
The Pitching Academy will take place from 11 a.m. to noon and is broken into beginning, intermediate and advanced groups. The academy will use developmental drills to teach the mechanics of the fastball. Change up and drop ball instruction may be provided once the fastball mechanics are grasped. Pitchers are asked to bring their own catchers.
The Defense Academy and Catching Academy will occur simultaneously from 2-3 p.m. The Defense Academy will teach fielding and throwing fundamentals, while the Catching Academy will teach throwing, blocking, covering bunts, pop ups, and steals.
Each separate, one-hour academy is $60, covering all three Sundays. Participants should come dressed to work out.
