I'm going to be a freshman this year. In 8th I ran CC did Basketball and ran track in the spring along with travel ball (softball is deffinatly my fav :D). My batting coach said CC would be bad for my sprinting and agility (I found that to be true last year so I listened) and I really don't like the girls who play basketball (ball hogs :p) I would run track but it's the same season as softball. I think I'm going to join French Club for something to do. My mom wants me to join swin team but lets just say I'm not the fastest fish in the pond ;& Out of the pond it's a diffrent story though;)

It seems a lot of people are saying, "Their daughter plays more than one sport." How does your travel ball team deal with multiple sports kid. Most high school team coaches will bench a kid if they miss just one practice. My daughter is starting the 7th grade. She currently is playing volleyball this fall. They practice everyday after school. We are currently luck that the softball team only practices on the weekends during school. Some of our kids travel two hours for the travel ball team. So weekends are the only times possible during school. We still have individual lessons of pitching and hitting during the week.

Again how does most of the softball teams deal with these issues. Will your softball coach bench your kid for missing practice for another sport game or practice?

I would like to hear more from some of the girls and parents with girls in college. What did they do? In hindsight would they done anything differently.
We used a simple formula. The CURRENT sport/team your DD is playing for has priority and focus. During high school, DD NEVER missed practices! During summer ball, she NEVER missed practices. Of course, not counting TRUE emergencies, etc. Hitting & pitching lessons were scheduled in between. Busy? You bet! But that schedule is what prepared her for college. Get used to juggling schedules if she's going to college to play ball, because it's part of being a college athlete. The upside is the discipline gained through using good time management skills.

There are some VERY prominent travel organizations that rarely practice as a team. So how do they compete at a national level? They practice at home, and work with private coaches! Then they show up for weekend tournaments FRESH with polishes skills ready to compete - similar to a fall college schedule. Granted, come January/February, college teams are putting in the maximum NCAA hours for team practice. But the major focus of a select softball team should be to showcase it's players. It is the player's responsibility (NOT THE TRAVEL TEAM OR COACH) to polish their skills to not only help their team compete, but to impress on college coaches that they are college capable athletes.

A stud catcher that knows Jui Jitsu...................YIKES! LOL!

Boys would cry when they had to be her 'grappling partner'. It is a family thing.
Dad - Black belt
Son - purple belt
DD - high Blue belt
Mom - prefers CCW permit. :lmao::lmao::lmao:

If they focus on one sport too early, 10 or 11 years old, you run a high risk of burnout by the time they get to 10th grade or so. Keep doing what they can manage, most travel coaches understand school is priority, at least the ones we have did as long as the girls work on skills on their own. The biggest thing to worry about is grades. No college coach is going to want a kid that can't balance school and extra cirriculars. Now with Sokker, all of ours got out of it in 10th grade and glad they did, as too many ACL's were getting blown out on other girls. 3 in 1 year on our HS team. Girls sokker is worse than hockey on grass for the girls....

My youngest dd plays travel volleyball, travel fastpitch, school volleyball, and school fastpitch. The main issue we have is that school fastpitch and travel volleyball seasons overlap. We were very lucky last season in that we had only one conflict but I'm sure we will not be so lucky this year. By the time she enters HS, I'm sure she'll have to make a decision between travel volleyball and HS fastpitch.

Yep, current team takes priority. DD played school volleyball, basketball, and travel softball starting on all the teams, and was an A student (academics are the priority over everything) thru middle school. Brother also in 2 sports in high school. It keeps us busy but is soooo worth it to watch them excel in what they like. This year as we enter high school sports with her, we have found that it is different and the high school coaches don't appreciate multi-sport athletes and make that very clear at least at our D1 school. Kids have done it ahead of her (3 sports) but you better be good so the coaches overlook any occasional conflicts. It is a shame because good athletes should be allowed to excel in the sports that they can and not be limited by egomaniac coaches who think their sport is the only sport worth playing. My DD may back down to volleyball and softball (winter, school, and travel) now that she is in high school to make sure the academics stay strong but it has all taught her to be ready for what life has to throw at her in the future.:)

For serious softball players wanting to play other sports ? I suggest the following that will minimize conflict with softball as well as to minimize the injuries that affect softball:

Competitive Tiddly Winks
Full Contact Haiku
Extreme Air Hockey
Interactive Solitaire Competition
Origami Base Martial Arts Competition
Team Thumb Wrestling

lol hahahahaha :lmao:

DD is preparing to enter her senior year as a DI pitcher, and I'd be glad to share (or bore you with :)) our complete experience from when she started playing softball! She earned a very generous athletic scholarship, which will allow her to begin her "after softball" career with very little debt. We developed a plan, which is readily available to anyone. Just ask or PM me and I'll be glad to share.

You will not bore me I am very interested in how you and many other have done it. You can pm me or just put it out here for all. If you have anything to send then pm me and I will give you my email address

Sammy thanks for the PM. I had a lot to say and then my computer went bonkers and I lost everything I typed!! It would be nice to see more stories on how it was achieved. We can only learn from it. I feel part of it is in the Marketing. You have a product ?player/team? and you need to go out and let the consumer ?colleges? notice them. Of course it take a great player, and maybe just going to show case tourneys doesn?t make it happen. I would assume that players would have DVD?s, some type of resume to give to these colleges; and the information would not be all about softball. Staying with your community travel team and high school may not get you there?? Is some of what I am saying is true??/ Would love to hear from parent/players who has gone through this. I am putting my statements/questions out there to get response. For allI know i could be way off.

As parents, simply remember this:
While we run and struggle to make it happen (within our schedules); this time will pass by and then we can only talk about the fun of see our DD's excel in whatever event we were at. ENJOY IT!
