If a school's baseball field has a regulation fence, but the softball field does not, is that a Title IX violation? Hubby and I were talking the other day about how far Title IX extends.

Here is a link that discusses Title IX- I think the key is that "facilities" & "equipment" have to be "comparable" but not necessarily equal- the article notes that the so called "benefits" to the players (from the facilities or equipment) would, however have to be equal. I personally think there is a benefit to having a homerun fence from the standpoint of stats and nominations for county/state record holder

Title IX can get ugly if not completely understood and read the right away. I am a Title IX coordinator where I work and people often see this title as a women's right issue when it is not. All things must be equal for both genders and violations under title IX will be granted if Males aren't treated the same.

When it comes to an outfield fence, there is no discrimination that I can see there. Was it donated to the boys? and Does it effect safety? those are the first questions that I would ask if I was looking into it. It doesn't hinder their rights since it is not in the softball rules that all softball teams must have an outfield fence.

Plus, if it's anything like the Softball field at John Carroll University, space limitations force the use of temp fences so that other sports can use the outfield grass for their playing fields. Unfair? maybe. But what else can the school do?

At our school we have no fence on the Softball field for that reason, other sports, practicing in the same area. But it gets old when you want to have a softball practice and some idiot did donuts on the field with a car. But the boys fenced field is all locked up. The boys field also got drainage a few years ago so the boys JV is playing tonight and the girls are cancelled.

Actually, the girl's field was built to be the JV boy's field and they were going to send the girls to play at the township Park. So, the fence is at 300', just like the baseball field.
