I am coming across a couple different tournaments here and was wondering what the best one or two where for college exposure. With us doing a shorter schedule this summer this is where our focus will be and that's getting the girls in front of prospective coaches.

The NFCA recruiting camp will be with the Fastpitch Classic.... www.fastpitchclassic.com
The NFCA camp is the only proven college camp in the Toledo area. Last year with the Great Lakes Inv. there were over 100 teams of 16 and 18U teams from 9 different states and Canada. We have moved the nfca camp to be with the Fastpitch Classic in 2009 due to field conflicts.

How long has the Toledo Tune-Up Midwest College Showcase been around? Can you give past attendance results or direct to a web site with that info?

The Toledo Tune-Up Midwest College Showcase is new this year. It will be interesting to see what college coaches show up. I applaud the Magic for attemping a showcase tournament. It is very much needed for the Toledo area. They face an uphill battle, as the tournament is the same weekend as ASA States and they won't be able to draw the top teams in Ohio. Another possible problem with the tournament is that it is USSSA sanctioned. Most college coaches only look at girls playing in ASA tournaments. That is why ASA/USA nationals draws the most college exposure. You don't see the same at USSSA nationals. Again, I think making the Tune-Up a showcase tournament is a great idea, but the Magic might need to look at making this a ASA sanctioned event. This will enhance the possibility of drawing more college coaches.

Heat29-

Excellent points, but I am looking at it differently lol, Here is my angle: ASA 16U states is in Findlay that weekend, it will probably be the biggest draw of college coaches that weekend. Maumee is a short 45 min drive to Findlay, If I read things correctly the Magic have secured cheap hotel rooms at the Holiday Inn, free dinner at Jed's for college coaches and the showcase I believe I read starts on Thursday. I think we might get a Akron Team showcase and Best of the Best deal, with both showcases helping each other or the Tune-up being a benefactor of 16u ASA states being held so close to the showcase. Just my Thoughts, only time will tell.

I don't think the Magic will ever make this a ASA tourney, they are locked in USSSA. It will be sink or swim as a USSSA Showcase. But knowing how well the tourney has drawn in the past I would guess it would continue to be one of the better tourneys in our area.

-Side note: I implore the Toledo travel organizations to stick to the thread topic and talk about the Tourneys. Not make some kind of thinley vailed post about the other Organizations tourney which will then solicit a response from the other taking the thread off topic.

I had some group from NW Ohio contact me awhile back about a tourney as well. NAFA 18-u Elite Gold Nationals was larger than ASA last year. Something we are proud about actually. It was held in Sulphur, LA has year and looks to go to the same place or Beaumont, Texas in 2009

thanks for the comments Buckeye Heat 29 and Uber. The USSSA will stay that way, but we think the showcase event, not a tournament sanctioning body, is what is the draw for this. As Uber mentioned, it's already one of the largest drawing tournaments in NWO, and the tremendous response we are getting from BOTH colleges and elite travel teams are encouraging. SGS did the original NFCA and weren't thrilled with it to be honest, thus the reason we are doing both a skills session [with colleges determining the format] and then coming back with Showcase games were the players can further demonstrate to colleges their skills under the pressure of the game. You can click on the site links at www.permiersportingevents.net to watch the college coaches commitment list grow.

thanks for your comment Uber about keeping the thread on topic! We agree, having two events in the same proximity is a benefit to college coaches and the players who are involved in both. We initially were concerned about being in competition with Compuware, but one of the travel coach "legends" on our advisory board [like that Dave?] said that would be a plus also, that coaches could see more then one event. Maybe next year we'll have our event, ASA and compuware on the same weekend! Also our event is not catering to just d-1 elite players, if you look at our commitment list, it has NAIA/JUCO/D-1 etc. coaches coming. We believe this is where most of the kids will end up also, very few end up at D-1 colleges.
