Re: Top pet peeves of 'tournament' ball

I would like to see the Flip Flop rule utilized. If, after the home team's at bat, they are in danger of a run rule the following inning, they should become the visiting team and bat again. If they do not score enough runs to avoid the run rule, the game is over. If they do score enough runs to avoid the run rule, the game continues with the home / visiting teams reversed.

I hear ya Dave. But too many people would mis-interpret that rule. (Almost as many as those who mangle Flex/DP...)

Big one for me is watching opposing coaches pick off your pitches and location and relay them to the batter. I heard this "listen to me before every pitch". And they did. Boils me over - rule or not. Gonna have to put on the wristbands that we got from Coachjwb just so I don't blow a gasket.

8:00 am games
True dat! Or the increasingly popular Friday morning start times. I believe coaches and parents give plenty to the sport, without having to give up vacation time, or maybe even go without pay.....in order to make these games.

When Louuuuuise started playing, the worst we had was maybe leaving work early on Friday afternoon to make a 6:00 start.

The good ol' days... ?

But, we didn't have Walking Tacos back then either, so it's a wash.

Times have changed a little bit. Back when my DD was in 16u and 18u, we handled this a different way, and it was effective.

I'm with you CarMad, I came unglued last year in Akron playing one of the top organizations "white" team. Their assistant coaches would say listen to me in the box and they would wait for me to give a sign and then say wait on it (changeup), take it the other way (outside), pull it (inside), watch the rise, etc. Finally I just asked them are you going to hit for your girls too? How are they going to get better by you telling them what is coming? Unbelievable... I think it's classless when coaches do this because you aren't teaching the girls anything.

Again, the thread asked for "pet peeves" and I simply replied with mine, while acknowledging that I understand why they're necessary. I'll rephrase my answer to drop deads (even in pool play because most teams are still generally trying to win and drop dead rules result in many teams stalling) and time limits of less than 80 minutes finish the inning.

You're probably right. Blue may already have is hands full explaining why the DP and Flex cannot be in the lineup at the same time..... I guess explaining the Flip Flop rule may just put him over the edge...

Next inning, call your pitches exactly how they let their batter know...until the 4th pitch when you call "Better Duck!!!")

Flip flop works in slowpitch pretty well, but fastpitch keeping a pitcher out there for 6 outs, even if relatively easy outs I don't like the thought...

I wish results would be posted with more regularity from TDs. I know that scores aren't always representative of what happened on the field, but I also like to see results from tourneys DD's team isn't registered in a well as those she attends.

Read most of the Posts about time limits ,drop dead etc,I believe that its about the money, but think its the vast talent differences on these teams that either add or shorten games.Poorly played games errors =long games between two less talented teams,Better teams vs Weaker teams shorter games run rule etc.2 Better teams about average time needed.I guess the question is in a shortned game ,are the next teams ready to go, to effectively get the games in.Maybe that is why some like PGF are breaking down Teams into Futures,Premier,Platinum to have full games at the higher levels?

Re: Top pet peeves of 'tournament' ball

I have an issue with drop dead then not reverting to score of previos inning. This past weekend we were leading 4-3 after the 4th inning. 7 minutes left so we had to start the next inning. Other team scores a run before time expired and game ends in a tie. This makes no sense to me. How does visiting team get 5 at bats but home team only gets 4? Just my opinion

When I coached travel ball, these were my biggest pet peeves:
1. Pool play scores/brackets not updated. This is not hard to do. Some tourneys now do a good job with this, but some still run many hours behind.
2. Not taking care of fields. Actually, this is beyond a peeve, so maybe this doesn't belong here.
3. Time limits of 75 minutes. Need at least 90 minutes and preferably 105 minutes.
4. Bracket placements that make no sense based upon pool play results.
5. 8 a.m. games. Who plays any sports at 8 a.m.? MLB and the NFL don't start games at 8 a.m. Nobody does.

Dover last year was the first and only time I ever saw drop dead with no revert. Hated it.

I will take the pro old mean (TD) dude counter part role in tonight
Show on The Softball Zone Radio Show.

This will be a very easy role for me to play.

No temporary fences. This changes the game completely especially at 14U and up. I cannot stand seeing a girl with absolutely no chance of retrieving a hot roller on dry outfields.

I think not having fences henders both offense and defense.

Hands down 8 a.m. games trying to get these young ladies warmed up at 6:30 a.m. when the sun isn't even up yet.
