Tournament demands

Plenty of parking.

Post the Brackets/Schedules where we can see them.

Schedule my games on fields that are relatively close together.

I don't have concession. Did you make more in concession by NOT allowing teams to bring in coolers? Goshen does their own concession to raise money for the kids in their park programs.

Glad to know you got local umpires as well.

As for umpires, I usually don't have to.. but if you want the best to come join you in an event.. sometimes you have to.

Or take for instance, having an NSA event in Wilmington three years ago and absolutely NO local NSA umpires in town or in the area. I was required by NSA to put them in rooms if they weren't local.

As for Cincinnati area umpires say in ASA, I know the assigner sents his best to baseball tournaments as that is where his BEST want to go for the money purposes and if he didn't.. they wouldn't be working that weekend. Catch 22.

Housing umpires is not needed if you have thousands signed up like "Big Blue" does in Ohio. The other groups do not have the numbers and especially if they are breaking ground in an area for the first time, need to have officials travel in to work. Many of them are scheduled on Sunday also and need a place to stay after they work on Saturday.

Also many of these hard-working guys and gals will umpire but can't justify the sanction expense and uniform requirements for a one time gig each year and I am not putting them on any field in one of my tournaments if they are not dressed properly and pay there fees. This creates the proverbial Catch - 22. It cheats the game, the girls, and also the association if officials representing said group are not of that groups proper attire. If the teams have to pay the expense of sanctioning, then the officials need to take some pride in there job and do the same.

This is why a TD may need to house officials. Plus I like to get some new blood into my events once in a while for my UIC to evalute them. This way he can recommend the deserving ones for State and Worlds. It doesn't bother me to house them for this reason because I justify it as part of my job. That job is not just to get teams to attend Worlds, but to get deserving officials out to Worlds also.

Mike

Don't forget, concessions bring in a HUGE amount. I ran a few tournaments and we made more in concessions than anything. That is why I know gate fees are not necessary unless you are not providing concessions. We didn't set our umps up in any hotels either.

I'm having a time now trying to talk my umpire group into getting their ASA license. The ones i have from canton/Akron area that come down to work for me.. of course have ASA licenses for up there.

But, the ones down this way do a lot of USSSA and can't seem to find a sound reason to spend huge amounts of money on sanction and uniforms if they only have a State Tournament in Hamilton to work and/or be the low man on the totum pole of the Cincinnati Umpires Association and personally I have two ASA events and they are in September. Looks like I'll be bring a boatload of them down from Canton and Akron and a lot of one dayers from Columbus.. so I don't have to pay for rooms.

We put on several tournaments each year.
We don't charge gate fees and we do have plenty of parking, cheap concessions, clean brick restrooms with running water, and we do allow coolers, dogs, grills, or whatever. Brackets are centrally posted and updated after each game. Most people don't have any idea what goes on behind the scenes to prepare for a tournament.

Our Fall Frenzy last year was almost rained out but with a great grounds crew (Mike) :lmao: and $500.00 worth of field dry the tournament went on.

If I read the thread correctly, you had rain BEFORE the tournament and the rain ended on Friday morning ( like we did down at Goshen with the Lady Lasers Gold event) and no rain DURING the event, correct? http://www.game-ex.com/vb3/showthread.php?t=15118 . We used four bags of diamond dry and it was in one spot only.

I know, the leaf blowers are great. I like the shirt idea as well versus trophies.. and they cost less too. But, then again, I don't give out trophies and shirts.. I give out hoodies, jackets and uniforms.

Gate fees are usually, not always, but usually tied to the owner of the ball park. If you want to hold a tournament at a certain ball park, then you have to deal with their gate fees.

About the only way to handle this differently is to include the gate fee in the team registration fee. So, 12 girls per team, a minimum of 2 guests per girl = 24 guests. $3 per day per guest = $72 per day x 2 days = $144 per team for a 2 day weekend added to the entrance fee.

As a TD, this is an option worth considering IF you can get the ball park to go along with this. Of course, the admission fee would be negotiable.

I've been checking out these sites for prizes for the Hall of fame events.

Watches: Custom made with "Hall of Fame Ohio" in the dial

Rings: Custom made

Which do you think the girls would like? The watches or the rings.

Itried to put the links up here but it won't work for some reason tonight.

Sounds like we need to get them plenty of NSA events to work in SW Ohio for this fall and next year. ;) They might even be able to go into Northern Kentucky since there is a NSA park over that way.

LOL...when the state requirement is gone off the teams that have qualified.. then we'll talk.

I'm gonna put the website to the rings and watch on here and you can look around on the site. For some reason it won't let me put on the link.

The watches are sweet and about $45.00 per watch .

The custom rings run about $57.00 each. I got in a "contact us" letter to them hoping they get in touch on Monday. The rings are sweet.
Also, check out the USSSA championship rings in there. Come in Gold color and silver color..$10.00 a piece.

I'll put the links in here again and it won't work.

Watches: www.chalktalksports.com When you get to the site.. click Personalized gifts in the top left hand corner and on the next page click the watch picture.

Rings: www.crownawards.com Then enter "Rings" in the upper left search... and right below the USSSA rings is the ring I want. Actually it has Hall of Fame on it or two rings to the right of it is custom rings as well
