Tournament Formats & Tie Breakers

great answers - people.

Interesting comments on qualifier vs non-qualifier.

Yes, the cost is more to host a qualifier, however, you have a significant increase in teams attending if it is - more than compensating for increased cost. ?Bigger tournaments bring bigger name teams and so on.

I happen to like finishing the games. ?I also like the double elim w/reentry format, despite the issues it brings because the teams get more games - and winter IS about seeing what you've got, and what needs more work.

Now, in a pool into elim format, I have no problem in a pool game ending in a tie. ?I use the point system ?for seeding(2=win, 1=tie, 0=loss) ?- makes it easy. ?

Before someone brings up the comment about only being in it for the $$$ -

there is a balance between doing it for the $$$ AND being able to do it because you have the $$$. If you talk with Spano, Gallighers and us, you will find a passionate love for the game and the girls, along with large bills.

Everyone talks about building their own complex and I just smile. We definately dont get rich, however I did get an email this morning from the parents of one of my former players - talking about her college team, and thanking me for my part in getting her there. Maybe I am rich. :)

Congratulations Dave! ?You are a rich man. ?What else could you ask for. ?I hope the emailer included a "Thanks to Marcee" also for all the hard work she does behind the scenes.

As far as the Tournament Format / Tiebreaker thread, I'll put in my 2 cents as a coach (even though I've never entered a team into a winter/indoors tournament):

Double-Elim with re-entry

Pool play - let ties count

Elimination play - regular ITB for 2 innings and enhanced ITB thereafter (start runners on 2nd and 3rd)

AMEN!! dtrj.............I agree that it is difficult to view the results of an indoor tournament in Feb with the same intensity that you view a spring/summer qualifier for Nationals. While I think you should "bring it", any time you step on the dirt, inside or out, it is not fair to hold a TD of an indoor tournament to the same standards as outside.

I love the indoor season and appreciate the opportunity that it gives my teams to improve and play year round, BUT...it simply is not the same game, and should not be traeted as such

finish inning and end in tie if pool play, ITB if bracket play.

two umps but only if they are real umps... not one real ump and one other (not a dig at Thunderplex but just a suggestion).

maybe start every inning or every ining after the 3rd inning with a runner on second. The long fly ball is useless in most indoor tournies any way. lets focus on small ball and pitching.

btw I'm a coach - 16U

Dave,

No dig taken.

As an explanation to the comment - we have an umpire training program throughout the winter and identify those officials with a different shirt. At the end of Jan, they were all sanctioned PONY and NSA. Having gone through the HS course myself, these folks have received WAY more mechanics and rules training that we did in that course, as well as having 3 months of mentoring.

Definitely glad we have the opportunity to even think or discuss the issues of "indoor ball". I think the advantages of having more places to play and/or practice benefits everyone, especially the girls. I think the PA/OH area is grooming alot of very talented and experienced players that might not be a successful without indoor facilities.

Whatever the rules...go with it. If it means focus on small ball, we all know how important that can be in this game. We usually focus winter on small ball (offense and defense) as much as possible. Not that we leave out the hitting, but as someone mentioned it's usually a single no matter what indoors. So try to fine tune a specific part of the game during those opportunities indoors.

and one more thing Dave, move that ribbon in the net 15-20 feet closer to home and let some of those hits be worth something

I for one appreciate people like Tim Galligher and Dave Anderson for providing an opportunity for the girls to play in the bleak months of Ohio winter. It take a very SPECIAL person - along with a great staff -to hold an indoor tournament and I am extremely greatful that there are individuals like this in our communities. I know how rare it is to find those with the desire and love of the game to undertake this monumental task. You have to love the game and the girls that play the game to put yourself through this year after year.

Tim and Dave, my hat is off to you.

Dave,

We are looking at doing that, as well as adding 2 [glb] small [/glb]"doubles" targets and the home run banner. ?I want to be careful not to make too many dead-ball spots. ?"All you can get" keeps things moving faster.

Johnnies -
Thank you for the kind words. ?Marcee and I truly appreciate all of the support that you and the rest of the softball community give us.
