littaguy714 - Emerald Necklace is the league that I was also referring to in my post. However, we have tryouts in early August and teams are formed a couple of weeks after that. Rec ball is totally different from this, big drop in skill level.

When they get to high school are they going to ask that the travel players be separated from the rec players so they don't get hurt there too?

No when they get to HS, most likely the travel players will be starters as freshman, the rec plays will still be complaining and their parents will be too.

My daughter plays both travel and rec at 12U. Travel comes first with practices/games and anything extra my team choses. She helps everyday with the rec team that she is not tied up with something for travel. My daughter catches in travel and for any pitcher on my team that needs one for their pitching lessons. My daughter also sees a catching coach and a hitting coach. So YES it is 7 days a week and she loves it. Now I do agree if your daughter is a dandelion picker she my get hurt but 12U is 12U. Those parents need shut up and to leave it alone. They just want to complain because little Suzie is not the superstar when the "travel kid" comes to play. I think having the kids from travel come back and be a leader on the rec teams is a great thing for the local school teams. What I have learned over the years is the rec coaches turn these travel kids loose and don't know or don't care to correct the bad habits these kids pickup in rec ( because they can get away with it in rec). I have learned that usually the travel ball kids batting averages suffer if they are not disciplined and if they are missing travel practices for rec ball the entire player suffers.

What percentage of rec girls go on to play high school softball? Is a rec team going to compete with another rec team stacked with travel players? No.it doesn't happen. Why do we have rec and travel leagues. Because the talent and commitment is high in travel while rec players practice one month out of the year and travel players train year around. Your comments are ridiculous and foolish. Travel players should be disclosed and spread out around various rec teams if they are going to play in a rec league. Stacking a rec team with travel players beating up on rec teams is classless and please throw out the age arguments. There are freshman travel players that would run rule senior rec players.

I would guess the majority of HS softball players are rec players or less, and they all compete against each other in HS softball, from 9th to 12th grade.

I agree, stacking a rec ball team with travel players would be very foolish of the league.

.

When my DD was in HS we had a strong recreational league that resulted in a final for and a couple 16 finishes in Ohio D1 tournament. Now our pitcher and catchers did play high level travel ball but in my DDs Junior Senior years there were 15 on varsity and only 3 that played travel ball.
In the final 4 year there were only 4 travel ball players. Our JV and freshman teams also had a couple ladies that played on travel teams that would go to Dayton and Columbus but these teams were still 80% Rec players. In our league the top programs are flipped where the varsity starters are 80% travel players so that makes it challenging to compete but with strong pitching even teams with a small amount of travel players can compete at high school varsity.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but I thought "rec" league was for recreational purposes, i.e. the kids in the community get together and play softball for FUN! How do you tell kids that reside in this community that they can't play? Oh, the world we live in....
