We call all players who did not make the team.

It's tough to do but it has to be done.

When you call the kids / parents, do you reveiw what their strengths / weaknesses were during the tryout and/or what positions the manager was looking for?

To answer the original question we tell every parent/girl that they will be contacted within a week and informed of their status. I prefer that this be done via a phone call so that the parent/girl can ask any questions they may have concerning their tryouts.

I found out when I first started making these calls that the easiest way (for me at least) to start that discussion was with a general review of strengths and weaknesses. Of course if you say you're looking for an outfielder and the girl only tried out at catcher;& then the discussion can be real short if you like. (We post our needs by team and reiterate what we're looking for at the beginning of each tryout - most players get the hint.)

Gene,

My dd attended your try out for 16U this past Sat. She was asked to come back Sun. for a further look by the coaches.

I particularly noticed that you promised a phone call to the girls. Yes, it will be a lengthy process for you because of the huge number of girls who tried out. However, as a parent, I appreciate that you and your coaches don't approach this process as a chore, but more as an enjoyable experience for teaching our youth beyond just the sport itself. Plus, you are showing respect to the girls as persons, not as numbers.

Also, thanks for the organized try outs and the fact that coaches for all age groups were there to help with the judging of players. Even if my dd does not make your team, she learned a great deal and will be there next year. We want to play with the best.

Terrific post.

The journey will be much more satisfying for you and your girl and you will only enhance her chances in the future with such a great attitude.

Best of luck, kjbm

Thats why your a well respected coach and are with a top program. When my DD was a Freshman she tried out for the basketball team, the Basketball coach ran a top notch program watched all the summer games, very well respected coach at the school and in the city. After tryouts he and his entire staff met with each kid to tell them if they made it or not, and what they needed to work on etc. Top Notch person and coach for sure. That same year she tries out for the softball team after tryouts an Email was sent out to each kid with a number, if your number was on the Varsity, JV or Frosh roster then you made that team. If not you were cut, no explanation. The basketball coach had no player or parent issues, the line to see the Softball coach was long. lol.

I dont envy coaches who do a face to face, or voice to voice. But its really the stand up thing to do.

I think it is the right thing to do by contacting the player/parent. Why not let them know why you didn't choose them instead of thinking they just weren't good enough. Give them areas where they can strengthen....coach a little outside of the team, help the athletes out. We are here for the girls, right?
