Tryout Conflicts?

Does anyone have a conflict with high school fall sports tryouts and ASA Nationals? Weren't ASA Nationals traditionally held the last week of July? DD's team is not going to Nationals this year, but she would have missed vb tryouts for her senior year if they had gone.

Lost one player to volleyball tryouts. I'm sure there are a lot of others making tough decisions about nationals and school tryouts.

i have one trying out for 8th grade vball (she will miss her tryouts entirley) and the other can make 2 days of her freshman year tryouts. I addressed it with the vball coach months in advance and was able to work things out. I know its not their senior year or anything but it is still important to both of them and thankfully the vball coaches understood!!

Yes, because of the way the calendar falls this year, it's a very big problem. I'm sad that some HS programs haven't been able to adapt.

HS are dictated to by OHSAA on when the can start so they really do not have the felxibility to adapt if they want to maximize their practice time.

@bh24:

I'm thinking of the older player who has already participated in the vb program at the school. The odd way that the calendar fell this year means that the HS coaches have to make an exception to allow a player who has already contributed to the VB program to attend softball nationals or the student has to decide she can't attend softball nationals so she can qualify for her HS volley ball team.

I confess that I don't know when actual HS volley ball competitions begin this year. Maybe the practice period would be so short that attending softball nationals eliminates an effective practice period. But if a player were injured for that week, would she be shut out of consideration for the volley ball team?

We have always taken the position that a HS team in season takes priority over anything we've wanted to do with the TB team. We find other softball players to help us in the fall. And we don't attempt winter practices because of the basketball players and the HS softball indoor teams.

This matter of the bad luck of the calendar (the conflict only happens once in a blue moon because vb season tryouts are defined by the "1st Monday in August") conflicting with the traditional end of the TB season (nationals almost always spill over to the first week of August) is forcing some girls to choose between helping their girls of summer teammates compete at a nationals tournament or helping their schoolmates in a HS sport. That's not a choice I think they should be forced to make and I appreciate the apparent fact that some high school coaches have tried to accommodate the problem.

my dd doesnt play volleyball anymore so thankfully it dosent affect her any more. with that being said is your dd's v ball team good enough to compete at a state or national level?? if the answer yes and she is that good the coach will work with her. most good coaches like kids that play more than one sport,and not everyone can go compete at a national level. hope this helps..

cgs,
I totally understand. Again the problem is OHSAA and their rules. I wasn't attacking the softball community just that the HS coaches are dealing with an additional set of rules that defines when they can have tryouts and start official practice. I also understand the dilemma for the softball teams and families who are placed in the difficult positon of having to make a choice after working all year to make a trip to nationals.

The petty behavoir of parents I would say runs deeper and is not as easily ignored when it happens at your HS. I could hear some parents now "so and so didn't have to attend tryouts and still made the team.".

Good Luck to you guys. I will be watching and hoping you do well.

Once again, OSHAA gets their sticky hands into anything. They ruin athletes more than help them. Another reason why some of Ohio's top softball athlete's aren't nationally recognized. They're handcuffed.

ASA Nationals have spilled over into August since ASA scheduled them to run through the first Saturday in August. Two years ago they were held at the earliest possible dates when August 1st was a Sat and they were held the latest last year when Aug 7 was a Sat. There shouldn't be a conflict with ASA/USA Nats for the next 5 years until Aug 1 falls on a Sun or Mon again.

ASA Code was changed last year to give territorial nationals (e.g. Easterns) more flexibility in scheduling their tournaments within a 3-4 week window.
