Having seen s*%cer (I can't even bring myself to say the word) take so many of our good athletes in the past few years, and with the new push for girls goof in the college scholarships I was just curious if the tryouts are seeing the same number of girls, more or less. I would love to know what the clubs are seeing this month.

I can only speak for what I seen at tryouts but Both the Magic and Wizards tryouts in NWO were packed, just a ton of kids. Heck there were alot of kids just at the Magic's 10U tryout. Both organizations have had to have tryouts on 2 days, so I think in our area Softball is alive and well.

Actually there were 48 14u girls at the Valley Extreme tryouts yesterday, twenty some were hoping to return to their existing teams. It was a very good turnout in the other age groups too. As for the 14u I was glad to see alot of talent out there this year, hopefully our coaches were able to find what they were looking for.

great tryout numbers for Magic, best we ever had, and some really top notch players. Pitching quality is thinner, and looking at other organizations in this area, seems to hold true for the most part. Quality pitchers, just not tremendous depth.

I was told over 40 also by a Friend who took thier Daughter. THAT is impressive. And I figurer them to have about maybe 7 openings.

I had the rare opportunity to attend most of the Laser and Stingray tryouts. The quantity and quality of the atheletes that also attended these tryouts were by far the best that I have seen in the past 7 years!!!

OHIO FASTPITCH looks very strong for 2009!!!

Why is this year going so well?

Olympics & pre-Olympic coverage?

Ohio fastpitch interest growing?

Better communications? - OFC impact?

Conincidence?

No real difference, just seems that way?

Better communications? - OFC impact? Biggest factor.
And the fact that talented girl are leaving rec ball to play on more competitive teams.

what about coaches wanting a decision by the 10th... give kids a chance to see whats out there. If you truly are what they want they will come but pressuring a 15 year old into making on the spot decisions before the tryout season is over is a little too much.

we had nearly 50 sign up for 12s and almost 60 for 14s and over 70 for 16s. we can't possibly look at them all in one day. So I asked a couple athletes to play for us and they said "I had to decide by sunday and I didn't want to get left out so I already took a spot" wow. for kids at 16 years old and with so much riding on those years for college scouting thats a little tough - its about the girls right?

?????
Why are there so many kids available at these try-outs???????? Are kids and parents that eager to move around/// Is the grass greener on the other side???? Six years ago I started with 3 girls and built a team. The past two seasons we have had only two roster spots available. We don't go out an solicit kids from other organizations. We have EXTREME loyalty to our players and parents. We do try to improve our team every year, but "over 70 " kids at the Classic's tryout. We had 12 at the 16U level. Kids that had offers in their hands. Kids that were just wanting to play softball.
Try-outs have become a "meat market" if you are pretty good player they might attend up to 6 different team try-outs. And in some cases come away with 6 offers. Dave I agree with you about girls being pressured to make very important dicisions with little time to think.
I liken it to sales people putting pressure on buying a house or a car. "take it or it might be gone" well for me when that pressure is applied I just walk. There will always be another house or car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks

The Valley Extreme 16U Blue

Sorry for putting "The", but if it works for Ohio State I thought I might borrow it.

i think depending on the org, the reason you might have more girls at one tryout isn't the fact that there are only 1-2 spots available, but these girls are motivated by

1) seeing a team on a message board like OFC and seeing what all the hub bub is about (and it still may be fostered by a parent)...girls and parents notice who makes ASA nationals, they know who wins what tourney....why does everyone want to become a Red Sox or a Yankee? same rule applies

2) being beaten/played a competetive game against said team--this is the highest compliment of them all....getting a girl to come out for your tryout after handing them their lunch during the season? wow...and all the same teams play one another...all it takes is for that one girl who isn't seeing playing time to test the grass...when you are talking at the level of some teams, one really isnt that much different than the other, you're really splitting hairs...then it becomes location and coach's prestige/approach...i mean, seriously, if you can make Lasers/Stingrays/Wolfpack/Classics/GCKA/Ice or Extreme, i would think you could write your own ticket....if you're taking a step down, then it becomes, "will i try and get the same exposure?" "instead of compuware, am i okay with playing at ----?"

3) being recruited....and i wont get into the mind of David of any other Classics coach, but i know other coaches know the families of girls they wanted last year or have been trying to get since birth....regardless of the EXTREME loyalty, people want to win.....and there is nothing inherently wrong with recruiting...it wouldn't be travel ball without it...how you go about it, I'm sure, determines how you sleep at night

2. 16U Lake Erie Tidalwaves
3. Holly Hills
4. Buckeye Heat 92-Allen
5. HOO Illusion ???

statman i agree...but the EXTREME loyalty...haha..where is that or what is that!..probably so many girls at tryouts because of coaches going in different direction wanting a little more and can change the roster in a blink.

My DH was asked to fold & bring our DD to other teams (2 or 3 actually) but he would not do that to the few dedicated girls he had coming back. But I am sure it does happen to teams. Dad's/Mom's that are coaches that get tired of the hassles, decide to take their DD and roll with another team.
