I'm probably showing too much of my hillbilly roots but lets not forget moon pies and zero bars.

My DD mentioned something the other day about a festival selling deep fried twinkies. Ever had one of those? She says it would make her too fat! I guess that's why she's the athlete and I'm the parent in line at the concession stand. Sounds like another idea for softball concession to me.

great entertainment..almost as good as seeing myself and ringer dogging out disgruntled parents..(there goes my ego again)...well, almost ;)

before games, dad and i would always get those coconut glazed donuts and some kind of strawberry with white on top pastry that looked like a sea anemone..those were the days!

I started this thread with the intent of having a "little" fun...amazing what mention of sweets can do to parents and coaches in a long off season. :D
i went to sleep last night giggling over my silly little post totally expecting big bear eyes and a mysterious lock on my post....but am amazed that there are others out there...like me. **sniff**
i have to say the king dons are remembered by me....twinkies are forever.. i've heard of them fried...but just can't imagine it. heard about fried snickers too....were these also invented by jenny craig? ha.
banana flips?? someone has to explain those a bit...i remember zingers...and oh those zero bars!! still a favorite of mine. who eats orange cupcakes?? wow....that blows my mind.
remember those old marathon bars?? long strip of caramel covered in chocolate??
little debbies....ok, that is like boxed wine...really...and i'm a redneck who wouldn't touch them. although they DID save my husbands life. fishing out on lake keeowee in south carolina...eating little debbies and throwing those little ol' wrappers overboard....led him back to base camp though.
or maybe it was the trail of puke....that lake can be choppy. ;D
ok, someone else's turn.
love the piss ant description.....amazingly on target.
um, hey bear....what do you like? :-?

This will really date me, but here goes....I remember collecting pop bottles to turn in at the local grocery store for a nickel a piece so I could buy some King Dons or a Hostess blueberry pie! Yummy! My mother-in-law loves those things you're describing Statman...I think they were Snowballs or something...Yuck in my book! Anyone remember those big wax lips or the little wax bottles filled with something that was supposed to be juice? Now those were cool! How 'bout those hard candies with the sour fizzy powder inside them called Zaps or something. Those were fun!

Sure, I remember those wax bottles and wax lips.
I also fondly remember the banana flips. (They were a circle of sponge cake folded in half with banana flavored whipped filling. mmmmm)
After more research I've discovered that the cake was banana and the filling was vanilla.
Big thumbs up to Ho Hos, King Dons, Twinkies, Zingers, Little Debbies, Orange Hostess cupcakes. But Snowballs? Yuk!

I also remember biting into a Marathon bar and the suction pulled a baby tooth. I don't think I wanted any of those after that.

OK, for those who are willing to expose their ages...who remembers bubble gum smokes?

Anyone remember a candy bar called the "Charleston"? ?I think thats what it was called. ?Had a fluffy center covered with chocolate, and was about 10" long. ?I really enjoyed them as a kid.

Charleston, good stuff. I don't think it beats a mallow cup and an Upper 10 though. PitcHil mentioned deep fried twinkies; add a scoop of vanilla ice cream topped with hot fudge, you can't go wrong there. I've got to be careful though, I can't have my team watch me huff and puff to hard when we run for conditioning.

oh the charleston!!! i have still seen those around....think their in our local bp station.
you want a blast from the past on some really cool candy, go to your local cracker barrel and really check out the candy section.
i got my kids some sugar babies for easter, as well as those little bags of "gold" nuggets...but it was gum...remember those? ha.
the marathon bars were the best....yeah, bad for the teeth.
remember the razzles?? powder type gum?

Just about any candy from the past can still be found. There are several internet-based companies that cater to folks looking for that favorite treat from their childhood. Here is just one:

Nostalgic Candy

MMMMMM! Give me three bubble gum cigars, a pack of those little wax pop bottles and a dozen Vanilla Buns!

One more guilty pleasure. Sure, donuts are yummy. But if you ever visit the Krispy Kreme store near the Polaris Mall you will be in for the ultimate donut treat. They have an automated assembly line on display that let's you watch their donuts being mixed, formed, fried and glazed in one continuous process. And the best part is they will give you free samples "right off the press"! A fresher donut is not humanly possible! They're softer than any donut you've ever had, still hot and covered in warm glaze- and downright addictive!

Wow---great link Bretman! ?Seein' all those old kinds of candy takes me right back to my childhood. :D

I remember what a big deal it was to save up a little change and go down to the drugstore by myself and be able to pick out a whole bag of candy for less than a buck.

Got bubble gum cigars, wax bottles with the colored sugar water in 'em, the candy necklace and bracelet sets, the strips of paper that had the colored sugar dots on 'em (would always have to spit out the extra paper that came off with the dots ?;D) and so many sweet tarts and ?pixie sticks it would make my tongue sore.

Kat's mom,...that is just so wrong,..lmao ;D ;D ;D ;D

2old, you mentioned the Zero bar,.....when they came out they had a partner bar like Mounds and Almond Joy. It was called the MILKSHAKE bar aand was fantastic, it just had an ugly wrapper. It was th an ugly brown with uglier green lettering. I think the Zero bar was even off the market for a long time, and now my dd loves them.

And Bretman nails another classic, the Vanilla BUN or my favorite the Maple BUN. Not a very attractive looking candy blob but veeerry tasty.

I'll throw a new item out nobody has mentioned yet, How about FIZZIES. You dropped a tablet in a glass of water and you got a fuzzy sort of Kool-Aid. When they got old and stale, you'd drop them in and they'd just lay there and barely break up and a couple of weak bubbles. :(
All the flavors were pretty darn good except the Root Beer and Lemonade, :-X

Ahhh, another BUN fan!

My wife turned me on to these a few years ago. I had no idea what they were, and the name makes me think of a biscuit or cinnamon roll sort of thing. What they are is a big glob of peanuts and chocolate (something like a turtle) with various fillings. Vanilla Buns have white creme filling, Chocolate Buns chocolate, etc.

I've only found one store in Columbus that sells these- Meijer at the checkout lanes, where they offer some other varieties of classic candy.

Another longtime favorite of mine also the ZERO bar!

there is a store in cleveland that sells all the old time candy bars. B. A. Sweeties on brookpark. I have taken my dds in there and they love it. They have alot of new candy too. Our last trip there we found the fear factor line of "candy" I wouldn't eat it. We bought cheese coated larvae. YUK. The kids at her party thought it was so cool and it tasted like doritos.

I used to love the moon pies also chicoflip. Remember Laverne and Shirley. Now when i eat one though, i feel nauseous :-[ after half of it.

But really, how do they get the filling inside those darn twinkies ;D
Tell the truth, how many of you lick the card board, or wipe it off with your finger to get every last bit of the tasty twinky ;)

If I'm not mistaken, cleaning all the Twinkie residue from the waxy cardboard is a Twinkie requirement. What self respecting Twinkie lover would leave some behind?

Bretman...awesome link!!!

I saw the things I thought were called Zaps were actually Zots....LOL ? the hard candies with the fizzy stuff in the middle...mmmm

I loved those Whatchamacallit candy bars too...I'd forgotten about them.

Sixlets....they were so small, you needed like a million of them to make a dent in your appetite. ?;D

Those Boston Baked Beans though....YUCK!!!! ? LOL ?

Did anyone ever eat just the chocolate off the top and sides of the King Don? ?I did that with the Ho Ho's too....then I'd unroll it! ? ;D

BTW....I can't believe this thread is still going strong. It's sad....but fun! ::)
