Pitching and Pitchers Discussion U11 Coaches - Pitching Tryouts

U11 Coaches - I wanted to get an understanding of what you are looking for when you evaluate pitchers moving from U10 to U11. With the 12" ball and increase to 40', there is an adjustment for the girls with some having limited time between the end of their U10 season and their tryout for the 2011 season. Just curious as to your thoughts. TIA.

I always look for solid mechanics, some accuracy, and the beginnings of a change-up. I take into consideration that they are at a longer distance, using a bigger ball, and that they have all winter to work on it. I also like to know how often they are practicing, how often they take lessons, and who their pitching coach is.

Most girls who have already started their development like the bigger ball and the 40ft. The girls I train, have been building wrist and forearm strength to prepare. Then comes the weight transfer. Coaches should then make sure weight transfer is in the back and foot is dragging. Pitchers will actually become faster knowing their push has to be harder.

During the 2011 tryouts I would be looking for proper mechanics, ability to begin better harder push, their pitching coaches should be putting in weight transfer if not already implemented. and ability to throw change up. also being able to locate pitches. Let' be honest. They will have a long time to adjust and good coaches know that. so most aren't expecting to see a miracle from 10u to 11u. If they can hit their spots at 10u no problem at 11u. Also, a good pitching coach with lessons being given once a week to three times a month. This way the coach knows pitcher is working hard. Once they are used to the ball and distance and have fastball and change up spotted . Pitching coaches should then start new pitch. It should be ready for next season. Leaving pitcher with two killer pitches and one other junk pitch working its way to equal out others.
