Umpires

What qualities do you look for in a good umpire? Behind the plate and in the field.

They have a pleasant attitude. They don't make the game about themselves. They get out from behind the plate for calls in the field. They hustle. They admit when they are wrong.

An umpire once told me when I went to argue a call that he figures that he's right 98% of the time and with that track record how can I argue? I turned around without saying a word and went back to the dugout.

going to make you mad... instead of asking what you expect from a umpire! how about parents?

I love an umpire with a Liberal strike zone. No Coffee Cans ! A good ump in my opinion should give a pitcher wide corners and make the batter go after the pitch if it is close. I want my batters to be aggressive and to go after the ball so this forces them to bust anything close. A good parent sits back, bites their lip, winces, cheers, rolls their eyes, claps, and tells their daughter what a great job she did all the way back to the hotel room even if she had a terrible game.

A good ump is consistent, not perfect. If a pitch is a strike one time it is a strike every time. I do not expect umpires to never miss a call but be consistent and put in a good effort. There are some umpires that are only interested in picking up their money and running.

Parents, wave you are right, now I know why my lip hurts after every game.

Any umpire that is hustling. And are consistant. I would rather have a consistant umpire who calls questionable strikes and balls then an inconsistant one that who-knows-what is being called on the next pitch.

I like an ump who is pleasant and talks to the girls. It puts the girls more at ease and you see more smiles when they're at the plate. I'd also like for them to call a perfect game, but lets live in the real world. ?;D

I personally think that if you get up after watching a game and you can't remember anything about the umpire, he has done his job. An umpire that is doing his job, and doing it well, will never even be noticed leaving the field after the game, because it ran so smoothly.
I've umpired alot of games, not many at the HS level, but I want to be the least important thing on the field and always hustle. JMHO
