Ohio Edge Bob Hoiles Infield Camp
Saturday and Sunday, January 5 & 6, 2013 Camp Criteria
The lesson plan will instruct fundamentals that will cover about 80 percent of the techniques that infielders will ever need.
Bob starts with teaching throwing mechanics because flaws are rampant in throwing technique. The players will learn footwork that will maximize their momentum so they can make stronger throws.
Then players will work on catching mechanics, pivots -- turning to the right and left to make throws -- and short and intermediate throwing techniques.
Also covered will be throwing off the player's strong side foot as in run down situations, glove flips, hand flips and other techniques that can be used in bunt defense at home plate and short plays around the bases. Players also will learn footwork for fielding, taking angles to the ball, and glove positioning.
Players will spend a lot of time working on the transfer of the ball from the fielding or throwing position to the throwing position. This is critical because in many instances plays break down or slow down when the athlete is transferring the ball in preparation for the throw.
The philosophy behind all these techniques is to give infielders defensive skills so they can make plays as quickly as possible. Taking steps away from the base runners is important because in fastpitch softball the bases are only 60 feet apart rather than the 90 feet that separates the bases in baseball.
Players and coaches will learn nearly 20 drills that can be used to help players become proficient in these techniques. Bob encourages coaches and players to ask questions. Coaches are encouraged to take notes and make diagrams so they can replicate these drills in their own practice sessions.
