I believe it is either:

1) Participation in more than half of the total contests of the scheduled varsity games.

2) The coach can also make a recommendation to the Athletic Director and High School Principal for an athlete to be awarded a varsity letter. The coach can also make a recommendation to deny a varsity letter for an athlete.

so a girl can play 4 innings and get a letter..wow thats fair for the girls that play every game..and actually work to get that letter..so letters mean nothing nowadays.

As far as I know, its up to each school and coach how they award letters. When I was coaching high school, it was my philosophy that any girl who spent at least half of the season with the varsity deserved a letter. It is the coaches' decision whether the girls actually played or not in games ... but if we picked them for the team, and they were there for every practice and game and gave it their best, then they deserved a letter regardless of their talent and playing time.

In this case the players were called and just played that game then went back down to JV.

total of 4 maybe 5 innings the whole rest of year at JV

softball chef,

I am sure that you have very valid reasons for your question. I know that high school athletics does not always work out as we hope. The criteria for every coach is different. It is not an exact science. It is not always fair. This is a question for your coach and your athletic director.

OHSAA has nothing to say on the matter, it is left to the school to decide - most of the time this means the coach has the final say.
