Sounds like some great competition amongst 14U teams who eligible to play travel ball tournaments. Wish we could be there.

sounds like there is extra meaning in the statement "who are eligible".

Things were interesting today. The tournament had been behind (some times up to 2 hours behind) all weekend, the posted game times allowed no time between games starting with the first game Saturday AM - despite doing 1 hour 10 min no new inning and needing to have a winner. The acting TD, the granddaughter of the NSA rep in Indiana was handed a bushel full of lemons and she had been trying to make lemonade all weekend.

The Doom vs Indy Gold game kicked off two hours late on Sunday - 2:50 (12:50 game). In the middle of the game to determine who would go on to play the Riptides the acting TD tells everyone that the Dome had only been rented out until 6 pm and that in order to be done by 6:00 and still get the LB Final and the Finals in, the LB Finals (Doom/Team Indy vs Riptides) would be 1 hour drop dead, revert back, coin flip (if needed). Doom end up beating Team Indy 4-1, face off against Riptides.

Fantastic game played by both teams (Doom v Riptides) - no score through 5 innings, 10 minutes left to start the 6th. Riptides score two in top of 6th but take too myuch time trying to figure out how to end their half of the inning (remember - revert back to 0-0 if buzzer goes off before Doom (home team) ends their at bat as home team). Finally Riptides get out of their half of inning with 4 minutes left as Doom comes to bat, first two batters get out, next batter walks on full count, buzzer goes off. So now the score reverts back to 0-0 and goes to coin flip. Doom wins the coin flip - to go to championship.

Obviously Riptides didn't feel very good about it, they played well enough to win. The Doom didn't feel very good about it either but the rules were explained to everyone prior to start of game. And, although this was for two berths to NSA WS, neither Riptides, nor Doom, nor Lasers Black were planning on taking advantage of the berths. The coin flip simply determined who played us (Lasers Black) in one more game.

Championship game was no new inning after 60 min, Lasers Black over Doom 2-0, game finished at 5:50. Doom played a tough game as usual. We are always guaranteed to get each others best - when we play.

Facility was great, umpiring was good, but tournament was not planned well at all. The acting TD had nothing to do with how it was planned, she just tried to make the best of the bad hand she was dealt.

Ouch.. hate to see that... the Riptides are such a good team - Misty does great with them ... that is 4 very good teams in the semi's - shame it had to end that way - I'm sure the TD felt bad but what could she do. Congat's Lasers Black...

No extra meaning intended. These same teams will be playing and winning on Sundays come summer.

sometimes high school ball can put a kid behind for the travel season. las year we had a couple freshmen on our team and it took awhile for their bats to come around.

Especially if a player plays JV or is in a divsion IV high school where most pitching is not on the same level as what elite travel teams may play.

Yep , big big dilemma on how to get a kid like that ready for major competition come mid to late May. Image that your 2nd year 14u team has 4 8th graders that can't even play up in HS , you have to decide ---play far below the talent level you will see in May by playing Jr high ball or not play jr high ball. was a very tough call for me but we chose not to play jr high this year. There were other factors that were actually going on that made it impossible to participate this spring but we would have passed anyway. very tough call. I love jr high ball. MD

PS sounds like the Ft Wayne Dome might have a WHOLE LOT OF empty tournies in the future if thats the way they are going to conduct business ----how do you get 2 hrs behind playing indoors ? The whole thing ****s for all involved . You think the Riptide girls want to go back there ? MD

My DD plays with Stingrays 12u and while there this weekend had to play til 1:30 or so on Sat AM and 2:00 am Sunday AM and then Sunday morning had to be back at the field by 7:15 to play at 8:10 am. 12 year old girls having to play after getting 4 hours of sleep is simply unacceptable. Seems to me there are lots of safety issues there.

Great facility and great umps and awesome competition. Just poor planning.

I agree softballmom --I've made 3 trips to Ft Wayne. Dome is a great facility but the games (to me ) simply are not worth the drive/stay/time/money invested. ESPECIALLY when you play til midnight- 1am , then have a 7am'er the next am. That has happened on 2 of our 3 trips to the Dome. My wife just laughs when I mention Ft wayne--and says "never again" be there at 5;45am for a 7;am game -- no thanks MD

Agreed softballmom & manitoudan. 12 yr olds working on 4 hours of sleep and then have to play a game that decides whether you go home or continue is unacceptable.....not worth the drive/money/exhaustion of the players. will always vote against going to ft. wayne from now on.

My older DD is on the 12U Stingrays, I agree the schedule was totally impossible to stay on. Like Tangy Mike said the TD did the best she could but I am not sure I would take a team out there to play. My DD was absolutely spent after that 8am game on 4 hours sleep. It just doesn't seem healthy to ask these young athletes to play under those conditions.

Now on the positive side we saw a couple very talented teams in the Crown Point Bulldogs and Michigan Athletics which surely helped our 12U coach get an idea of where we are and what we need to work on. Then there were a couple games with players and coaches who really had no business playing in a WS Qualifier indoors or outdoors.

The games I saw in 14U involving the Ohio teams were great. It is too bad their tourney had to play out the way it did Sunday.
