My niece plays middle school and travel ball in WEST VIRGINIA and her coach is telling her that she can't do both and I'm saying as long as there isn't 4 players from thE same school ON THE TRAVEL TEAM it is OK...how can people dictate what you do with your children...she also does gymnastics but I guess that is Ok????

I coach HS in WV and had this come up last year. I called and talked to the SSAC personally on this. In WV you are not allowed to play or even practice with any other team while participating on a school team- in the same sport. Softball is out, gymnastics is good.

I thought in Ohio that you can't participate on a travel team with 4 or more players from the same school...

I seem to recall this in reading the rules too... I may have misunderstood now that I'm easily on the fence about it

That part of the rule (in Ohio at least) is waived from June 1 until the end of July or the end of Nationals play whichever comes last, unless you are the HS coach of the players.

Don't know about other States but in Ohio it is taboo for the travel team to have practice or games for anyone on the HS ball team, while they are actively on the HS team.....to do so risks the players eligibility, the 4 player rule does not apply to anyone but the HS Coach for summer teams...but check the dates that this applies as some HS coaches keep a watchful eye on this. For JV players, they should be careful jumping to their summer team after they are finished with HS ball as the Varsity Coach may pull them up for tourney play....best to check with the HS coach as to when they are officially released.

Although I believe it gets overlooked, it also applies, at least in Ohio, to all teams outside of the June 1 - July 31 time frame. Not a big issue for most travel teams during the summer (although you have to watch any practices prior to June 1), but could be a concern during the fall (not a problem during the winter as the OHSAA doesn't recognize indoor softball as a sport).

Questions: If my 7th grade DD who is practicing now with her travel team, were to join her school team she would not be allowed to practice or play with the travel team until after June 1st and then not after July 31st? How would she know if she was on the team in the fall as the try outs would not be until March the following year?

If the Jr. High team is school sponsored then the same (HS) rules apply. If the Jr. High team is a club team then she is free to fully participate with both teams.

In ohio the school season starts March 30th or when the school has a scrimmage which ever comes first. Meaning from that point on girls may not play on any other team (practices, games, etc.) Till the end of the season, which this year is June 13th. But if not in the playoffs, and their coach says season over then they are free to do whatever.

Until she is released from her school team she cannot participate at all with her travel team. Period.

Do most travel ball players skip playing for their middle or HS teams?

Rick I'd be surprised if most the PA schools don't do this as well. I know some are more lenient than others but once conditioning starts if you are not playing for another school sport team (basketball, cheerleading, etc.) then you are not playing for any other teams until the season is officially over. Now, in Trinity the Middle School Program is over very early - usually around 3rd week of May. But depending on how playoffs go JV & Varsity can be tied up for May and even part of June. However, depending on the player and the coach - sometimes they will let you play with your travel team - if you are sitting otherwise - just to get in more experience for the next season.

In PA, coaches can make rules and try to prevent girls from playing/practicing travel ball during the school season (benching, threatening to bench, etc.), but they are not backed up by (in this case) PIAA rules.

In Ohio, the governing athletic association has specific rules against it - and they can punish players/coaches for breaking the rules.

Most JH/MS programs are club teams, so I would say that most play both. If you feel like you have to make a decision one way or the other, however, I would go with travel ball with this age group, IMHO.

Regarding HS, most put up with the restrictions and play both. By this age most TB coaches are tolerant of the restrictions as there isn't as much skill building that need to occur, so year around practice isn't as crucial. Having said that, there are some that forego HS in lieu of the TB experience particularly if the HS program doesn't fit their desired level of competition.
