I have a daughter who will be 10 in a couple of weeks. She's big for her age, but not heavy. She hits homers (2 Grand Slams this summer) in rec ball. She isn't fast, but is willing to work on it. Would it be worth it to try out or are most teams looking for a super star already made? I have a 11 year old that is on the fast track up (lots of talent, naturally) but she didn't start in travel at 10, so the 10U is new to us.

Every team would like to have a "super star" on the field playing for them. Some programs only take the finikshed product and some programs are actively involved in player developmnet. Look for a program with a good track record of developing a players abilities.

When we chose players for our 10U team last year talent was only one component of what we looked for. Other big factors include attitude, hustle (not to be confused with speed), coachability, and parents. I think you should definitely get her to some tryouts and see where she fits in.

Moving up to 11u after 2 years at the 10u level I agree with Mad Hornet. Look for athletic kids who can take coaching who have a solid understanding of the game. Parents who recognize that in travel every one was the stud on their rec team, and lets not forget that in travel kids can hit so outfield is not a punishment!

Sounds like she won't have a problem making a team. They key is finding the right fit for her. Remember when you go to the tryouts you are evaluating them as much as they are evaluating your dd.

She's been working in the batting cages for several months now, we go once a week. She has been in the 55MPH cage for months. She hits 10 solid out of 12 and fouls off the other two consistantly because her sister is teaching her to bunt:). As for the pipes, she sure knows how to yell at her siblings, does that count?
