What are Coaches and Teams looking for most?

IMO, it starts with great competition. But once everyone is signed up, it switches over to great customer service - leading up to the tournament and during the tournament. By great customer service - I am talking about communication leading up to the tourney, attitude of tournament staff and volunteers, how they handle adversity (weather), what they are willing to do to get games played, etc...

I think it will vary with the age level. Coaching 10U I want to put my girls up against the best competition I can but I also want them to play as many games as possible. With the ever increasing costs of tournaments I found myself planning this years schedule with one eye on who would be there and the other on the "cost per game" return I would get. An example is we passed on an early May tournament we normally went to because it was a 4GG for $425 and picked one in W. Pa that had a 5GG for $400, that is $80/game vs. $106.25. either way we were going to need a hotel stay so I wanted the extra game.

This was tough, it would probable be a mix of quality teams and games guarenteed. Unless your in a losers bracket of the double elimination format. That will bring down the cost per team in a heartbeat, especially if you win out the losers bracket and win it all. After the quality of teams, have to agree also with the customer service. I think our schedule was set-up based on the past quality of teams and customer service.

Quality and location are at the younger ages-what can the young players and parents new to travel handle. As they get older, quality and location again-competition and exposure.

Sanction will help drive quality in some areas and then in other times it seems like luck of the draw. Cost will become a factor when budgets are busted.

All teams that have experience in playing in many parks will for certain pick one park over the other based upon gate fees, park cleanliness, parents liking one place over the other along with probably 20 other factors to consider. Ultimately, we choose what fits our individual team goals and needs for the year.

No surprise that "quality of teams entered" is a top criteria. What is surprising is the number of tournament directors that don't post who is entered or keep their list up to date if they do. Is it marketing ignorance or laziness?

As a TD of a 1st year tournament (ASA Cinderella Classic 7/16-18), how do you go about attracting the "better" teams. Here is what we have done to make our tournaments (ASA Maple Leaf & see above) attractive:

ASA Sanctioned
ASA Eastern Qualifier
PAID berth to the winner of each age group
$395 for 4gg with multi-team discounts
9 quality fields all at one location
no games before 8am
HUGE discounts for pre-paid parking (fully refunded if rainout)
Actually 3 sets of restrooms (NO Porta-johns)
3 Concession stands (which will have reasonable prices)
No restrictions on coolers, food, etc..
Customer first mentality
etc.....

MustOhio's answer is correct. And we should consider it as another listing in the survey: Communication by Tournament Officials.

Can we reach them when we need them? Do they post advance info on a website? Are brackets/scores posted in an obvious place at the tournament? Can coaches and parents figure out when, and where, all their games are?

The best competition Level of teams entered and reputation of tourney in the past. Hate the drop dead and time limits, But i kind of understand why they have to have it. Good luck to all the kids/Coaches/TD'S/Parents that Put a lot of time and money into making all these tournaments happen.

Every team's goals are different, and thus tournaments are geared accordingly. Older kids looking for college exposure MUST play where the college coaches are! Makes NO difference what the field conditions are, restrooms, etc. All that stuff is fluff if you have a college path agenda. College coach attendance and top tier teams/competition is top of the heap for these teams.

On the other hand, if college recruiting is not on a team's radar, focus on clean restrooms, great food, free parking, nice groomed fields lined after each game, and shopping nearby.
