What are players allowed to do?

Have a friend who lives in Ill and has a daughter in high school. They were told that now that they are in high school they are not allowed to attend any more than two softball skills camps/clinics in any year (not just softball season) and if they do they would be removed from the school team. They were also told that even if staying within the no more than two clinics a year guide if more than four girls from the same school went to any clinic together they would also be removed from the school team.

I know Ohio has some strange rules and regulations when it comes to high school but I have never heard anything like they were told. Anyone have any knowledge of Ill school rules in regard to clinics?

Yes she is correct to an certan degree. . .some could be the board of educations decissions for that area. It is very different on the IHSA rules. You cannot even coach your players in the summer. . .I believe it was a total of 14 contact hours total a summer and most coaches use that for summer team camps. . .unless that has changed since I moved here in 2005.

I'll check with my buddy to see what's changed and what remains the same.

It isn't the school's policy. It is the state association.

When I lived there, you couldn't practice with your TB team, during the HS season.

Here are the two links to the OHSAA sites that will answer all your questions. The first is softball sport specific regulations and the second are the general sports regulations. Good luck:)

They are asking about Illinois and not Ohio regulations. We know all too well what the dinosaurs ( Ohio OHSAA ) regulations are here in Ohio .

Wait until they start regulating middle school ball and the kids. That's their next great adventure for sure.

Pretty sure you will find similar regs in most states to protect kids from overzealous programs and coaches.

Believe me, I know about school sponsored teams and "club" teams and the difference. Roger Delawder ( now in Arizona) and myself went through a question and answer period with OHSAA over the matter two Winters ago when he started up his league in Marion for club teams.

OHSAA WANTS to regulate the heck of the girls if they can get by with it. That's why I can't believe anybody would go with a school sponsored team versus a "club" team.

First part is hogwash.

The second part is only 2 per team. However all college camps easily get around it.

Here's Illinois' softball camp registration info that briefly explains how it's done:

The two per team has to be new since 2005, because I can guarantee when I coached there the high school team coaches could not coach. . .unless you are referring to the number of girls from one school and then that is not the case either. Most of the the travel teams in the Central IL area are based out of one specific town and all girls play on the same high school team. This is one of the reasons IHSA never made the move to keeping set numbers from one school to a team. Most of the teams were from small towns and would not have been able to have fielded a team otherwise.

Think he is only referring to the number of girls from one HS team who can participate at any given college clinic. I could be wrong, but that's what I think he is addressing . . .

Thanks for all the help and replys. My friend had planned on her daughter attending a few clinics this year just to work on her skills and has now been contacting people to let them know she may have to pull her out. And I thought football was confusing!

That would be a true statement then. . .you can't even have more than two girls attending the same pitching coach during the same hours from the same school or you are in violation. . .

I remember when my pitchers from the same school went to the pitching coach, they had to go the second hour because the senior and junior pitchers went the prior hour. . .
