CARD, just posted a nice video on playing at the next level. When watching the video Coaches talk about players and parents needed to understand the rules.

What rules are major blunders made by players or parents?

A lot of information can be found here. It will break down each division of play. There are lso lots of good resources for players, parents and coaches.

I would say the biggest mistake parents make is assuming playing a showcase schedule with a team will get you college coach looks and not understanding how the showcase events work.
Too many parents do not understand that the type of event, where it is held and who is playing in it makes a huge difference depending on the level of play they are trying to get to.

The second would be not understanding or seeing the talent needed at the various levels of play and where their DD fits in.

Cards,
You always have the most informative posts on this site. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us!

Now that coaches are unable to contact payers until the fall of their Junior year, what age will coaches be watching these girls at the showcase events? My DD will be first year 14U next season. Do college coaches pay attention to that age level? Looks like we will be playing at Scenic City and Atlanta Legacy (Veterans Tribute) in November. How are parents supposed to know what showcases are legit and which ones aren't?
Thanks~

There are a lot of good minds and experience on this site...14U is the time to start getting noticed especially if the goal is larger DII or above schools where they recruit out a couple years.

While the college coaches may not be able to have direct contact at your DDs age if, you are on the right showcase team your coach can most defiantly put out feelers for interest level . (Same with your HS coach). Camps/ Clinics and just campus visits can get and show your DDs interest in a school as well.

As far as what is a good or bad showcase for a player... that is decided by the the level of play/college the player is looking to get looks from, teams/talent entered, and, College coach interest. Your coach should be looking at past tournament teams and coaches in attendance to see if it is a match. The coach should have an idea of who in their team has colleges interested in them and who those colleges are to help forecast event success and future events.

Most of your bigger school D1 talent tends to play in more national exposure events. EX: in Ohio it would be Stingrays. Other Ohio showcases: Lasers, GAPSS, Recruit fest, Best of the Best even the ASA Ohio State tournaments bring in college coaches and are good options for more regional and smaller colleges/universities and from my experience (this is where most of the ladies end up). Your end of season National can also provide showcase opportunities if it is a higher level event.
Naturally; there are other parent/player factors to consider with recruiting and choosing schools and the tournaments they attend. In some cases college showcase schedules are not even needed.

Thank you for your lengthy reply. My DD is with the Lasers, so we aren't a showcase only team. We will be at Stingrays this weekend. We played in Lasers and several other showcase events this season. We opted out of GAPSS this year for the Indianapolis showcase last weekend. We are going to Kansas City for Nationals next week. Our team will have a new coach starting August 1st. He is a very well known coach within the Lasers org. I'm sure he will be a big help with the girls and getting them into tournaments where they will be seen. We will continue to attend camps as well. I think we are on the right track. Thanks again!
