What are coaches looking for in a player?

I know you are looking for the best player, that does it all, but lets be real. Most girls don't do it all. Not even college players.

Would you rather have a girl with great defense with average bat, or a girl with poor defense with long ball power.

A girl who is 6 foot tall in the 12U with concrete hips that can hit the long ball only with no glove or a 5 foot girl with great glove, speed and average hitting power.

A pitcher that throws 60 mph fastball (meatball pitch) across the plate with no location skills or no off speed pitches. Or the girl who throws low 50's with great location and with off speed pitches.

I think it just depends on what they already have. Most are just looking to compliment their existing roster

speed, plays well with others, willing to learn and work hard.

my typical player at 16u over the last 4 years is 5'-5", 118 lbs, under 3.0 home to first, 3.8 student, loves ball, looks foward to practice and being with the team as much as they do playing.

thats hard to decipher in a 2 hour tryout but we are getting pretty good at it.

Look at their parents first ... you have to live with them all season as well.. it is a shame how many girls we turn away after a conversation with the mom and dad...

I think they should look for a girl with great attitude, is serious about what they do, dependable.
i pitcher with heart, confidence, some speed, location.
I think really all you need is players who want to play, can play, are happy with anywhere they are put on the field. =]]

Depends on the team's goals. There are a few teams in Ohio that only take highly skilled players - typically on a college path. There are other teams that claim to be development oriented teams. There are recreational teams. With a diligent search, there is a level of play in Ohio that will suit your DD's goals and skill level. That's what really matters at the end of the day.

Most coaches are looking for the best hitters, the best fielders and the best runners whose parents are able to pay the club fees. They want those hitters, fielders and runners to be extremely dedicated to the sport and to have parents who never question a decision and who are helpful and happy all the time. It really helps if the parents don't know a thing about the game. Then, they won't grumble when the coach gets half a dozen runners thrown out at third and home in one tournament. That performance, of course, is usually followed by a stern lecture following the elimination game about how the players have to run the bases better. LOL.

I don't think most coaches are being honest with their self. They all say they want hard working players with speed, good parents and etc, but in the end they fall in love with the 6 foot plus girl with concrete hips.

Just like everyone says they want a honest, caring, best friend for a wife, but we always throw it all away for the blonde bimbo.

I've turned down many big girls with concrete hips for the little speed demons.

And my husband and I are best friends and do love each other and I'm not a blond bimbo. :)

Everyone says they want speed. I've seen a lot of girls who were like lightning have Manny moments and get run down. I'll take average speed a good glove and a consistent bat. Oh and someone who can park it over the fence.Truth08 I like the way you tell it these days.

Every coach looks for players that can already play, or have talent!

What I want to see from the girls at my tryouts are the ones that are willing to run from drill to drill, girls that talk to other girls they don't even know, girls that will dive, hustle, sell out on each and every play. Like Beckham said .... SPEED KILLS... It's very hard to see all that at a 2-3 hour try out. But if, and when you do, those are the ones that we look for!

You DON'T want to see kids get mad, upset, pout, cry, when they make a mistake.... We know that is going to happen!!! I want to see how they react AFTER they make a mistake or how they take the instruction or constructive criticzism that you give them and use it to make themselves better on the next play or drill....

You DON'T want to see parents coaching their kid through the fence at tryouts....Those are the first ones on my list to be cut! Because if Mom or Dad are yelling at them at a tryout you know what they will be like at games... NO MATTER HOW GOOD THE KID IS ... You don't want parents like that!!!

You DON'T want to see DADS warming up the pitchers (Unless there aren't catchers available) .... By the time you are 16 or 18 you better be able to ask one of the catchers to warm you up! At some point, Dads need to step back and let their daughter be the player she is going to be.....

You DO WANT great PLAYERS, PEOPLE and PARENTS on your team and in your Organization. Ones that let you coach, ones that ask questions, ones that want to be involved, ones that like to be around other parents, ones that organize team feeds, ones that like to have fun and know that it is JUST a game... BUT also understand that the game is serious... when the kids are fighting for playing time and fighting for college exposure and at a chance to be recruited....
