What have coaches learned this past season?

That having success on the field, during the season, does not mean that more players will want to play for you next year.

I agree on this one , even though I'm a parent I feel bad for our 12u coaches who are/were moving up to the 14u level. We had a great year , won 4 tourney's , had fun doing it also. Everyone seemed to get along great . Then we have 4 girls show up for 14u tryouts. Thankfully my dd is still a 12u but it inhales badly (can't say sucks) that the 5 12's we had this year don't even have enough girls to play together next year . Have I said southern ohio inhales badly for fastpitch lately ? If I did get used to it , I'm going to be whining about it alot  MD

I feel your pain. To avoid scenerio's like you describe, I keep my team all the same age. I've done this since I have been coaching travel ball. It creates a little more stable situation in the changes in age bracket. I've had to turn away girls that were a year older but still within the age group - which can be a difficult decision but I feel the team grows and learns better if they can move up together.

1. That there is not much loyalty in summer softball. And even if kids play all of the time, the team is successful, and everyone gets along...someone will always think the grass is greener some place else.

2. No matter what you do as a coach, your kids are recruitable to ''other' teams all summer long.

3. The Umpires always lose the games, not the players or the coaches. ( I am just joking on this one!)

** Sarcasm Alert **

All parents think their kid can pitch.

All parents think their kid is a shortstop.

All parents think their kid is not a right fielder.

All parents think they are better coaches, umpires, pitch callers, line-up makers and uniform pickers.

I learned that the parents do not understand all the things a coach gives up in order to coach the team.

I gave up a lot of things I liked in order to coach. ?Things such as:

Fishing

Hunting

Hanging out with Statsman Ray and Ringer

I learned
1. The best "calls" are made from the stands
2. Once a player reaches 2nd base they go deaf and blind.
3. "Be ready to start at 5:00" sounds more like ?"We start somewhere between 5:00 and 5:15"
4. If practice ends at 7:00 some kids will be picked up at 7:30
5. After ten years you will have collected more gloves than you'll ever know what to do with .

I can't live without it....

Its been 6 weeks since coaching 3rd and calling pitches, I suffer from shakes, a strange rash and flashbacks. (that could be reprecussions from experimenting in high school) My theapists says that I should be practicng with my new team 2-3 times a week to help me through this period but my wife things I should mow the lawn at least once before it snows...

I think I'm gonna marry my therapist

Next weekend I'm riding along with the 18U team then a weekof canada fishing with Jeff Klopfer and friends then the Ohio Classics Fall Qualifier!!!!

...according to some folks I am a horrible person.
(Thank goodness it has nothing to do with my ability to coach !!)

...calls from the outfield are better then the stands, I'm guessing they have a better overall view from centerfield.

...that my dd has great ability and attitude when NOT the president's/manager's dd.

...I enjoy house remodeling, yard work, and washing my vehicle

ps D_B, to solve the "shakes and withdrawls", my theapists suggested I decorate inside and out with leftover softball equipment, and take my dd to the field a couple days a week to throw with her w/o other kids around (she loves me again), relax in that porch swing I bought (4 years ago) one day a week with my older two dd's stareing at each other because the phone is not ringer from 5-11 pm every night with some softball drama. It's starting to help, but still get the urge once in awhile, I've been told this too will pass !!

the cat has arisen,.....

one thing i learned...

1--coaching shirts sure look nice
2--just because you're a coach doesn't mean mother nature wont hijack your tent--(thanks, storm in Gahanna)
3--you can post in the "coaches corner" and noot feel like you robbed someone
4-- a bad loss after a wonderful practice week really knifes you in the gut

I've learned that the first base coach needs to watch for a snap throw to first just as much as the base runner. OUCH!

Ringer,
My dad thinks that I'm an excellent Right Fielder. ;D I'm fast enough that nothing short of a line drive touches the ground between me and the center fielder, and I have a good enough arm to throw from deep on the foul line to third on one hop.

You're not the only one here that can hijack a thread ! :)

- ?There is never a home project big enough to make you forget about softball. ? ;)

- ?You can move you DD up and coach an older team, but you can't get away form certain parents. ?They complain their DD didn't play enough SS or that she hit in the 8 and 9 spot. ?Then they say they want her to play up with me. ?Hey did I miss something? ?LOL ? ;D :-? ;D :-?

- ?I am glad we have a coaches meeting tonight and practice next week.

- ?We are glad to see statman had time away from the diapers and his students to bless us with his presence. ?LOL ? ;D ;D

- A dark coaches shirt shows the sweat marks after a game or two. Make sure you bring an extra shirt for those long days in the sun. ;D ;D
