My 18 year old cousin was up in Youngstown this past weekend for the NAFB world series. Besides seeing my uncle and him all the way from Texas, I sponged up everything I could, not having been around any travel baseball players since the time my DD started softball 6 years ago. Of course, I always learn alot.
A. When you tweet about disastrous Red Roof Inn accommodations, someone will tweet you back!
B. My son received gatorades, five bucks form my uncle, a free game ball and other goodies for being a foul ball retriever. Which makes me think that baseballs are more valuable than softballs, or most kids wont run all day to get them so they were appreciative of his hustle.
C. My son said that after running the bases, that baseball players "run a long time" for a homerun.
D. Boys razz on each other a bit more. There was a team who showed up late and wanted to use the field for "in and outs" thereby postponing the start time. You should have heard the boys.
E. Baseball teams have at least 5 pitchers, and some boys just pitch, so they sit around not even in uniform until they are needed.
F. In softball, D1 is the ultimate goal, and maybe for some is to play out of state, maybe even the west coast. For they boys on this particular club, they range from D3, ju-co kids, D1 and kids who have already been drafted by major league teams. Can't say that for any girl around here. the opportunity is so rich for baseball.
G. Team camps still are the best way to be recruited. My cousin received so many offers by just going to camps hosted by UofH, USC and Purdue.
called to dinner...more to come
H. Baseball tourneys have no urgency whatsoever. After a game is over, the next group are barely dressing. Their warm-ups are less intense. Softball teams are constantly moving from field to field, warming up more than an hour before, and rarely do they ever finish 7 innings.
I. Baseball tourneys skimp on concessions. no hot dogs, no gum. What we got were sloppy joes and pepperoni rolls.
J. Baseball teams play two games a day. We average 3-5, maybe even more on certain weekends.
K. Baseball players go back to their hotel to rest. Girls? they walk around the park to the point of exhaustion.
L. Baseball players wash their jerseys friday night for the weekend. I've never once seen the girls have a mom wash their uniforms that were worn on thursday or friday for the weekend. girls are stinky!
M. The tourney actually booked the rooms for the players, leaving the parents to get their own. Free rooms for the boys! Does 18u Gold book rooms for the players in national tourneys?
N. When the losing teams' parents complain about umpires, the winning team ends up laying down squeeze bunts winning 8-1. That'll shut them up.
