What if you were charged to tryout?

You are better off studying your butt off and getting academic scholarships than relying on athletic scholarships. There isn't alot of money out there for softball so STUDY HARD!!

The initial fee is for securing a spot on the team and is often referred to as a registration fee. Teams do it largely to get a real commitment and to pay for upfront costs like uniforms.

There is definitely a network of preferred instructors. It is common for players to go to a few of them as a means to get on a specific team.

Bottom line: It is a myth that CA teams charge a fee just to try out.

You do not have to pay to try-out for the fundraiser for our girls HS softball, It is pay to play. 100.00 cost --60% payout. To be held Aug 21st in Portsmouth Oh. at the local CAY building. PM me if interested will be lots of food and cheap beer prices. cash tables , cash buy

OK here is a special deal, bring me 4 poker players and I'll buy YOU a ticket to play for free. Ticket includes a smoked rib dinner from nearly world famous "Scioto Ribber"

So sell 4 100$ tickets to your buddies and I'll buy the 5th ticket for you. PM me. It's this coming Sat. I need cash turned in by Thursday. MD

Exactly. I straightened my DD out this year. I don't want her playing softball for some scholarship, just play for fun. She WILL study hard and go for academic scholarships which will give her A LOT more choices with schools and that will better prepare her for whatever career she choices.

Way too many are fixated on softball scholarships which tend to be smaller schools and with partial "rides".

I'd sure like someone to name a Cali team that charges a tryout fee, because I can't find anyone that has heard of it. I'm not saying it has never happened or no one is doing it, but it certainly isn't customary nor pervasive.

I call BS until someone provides some proof.

Good Call!!

We went to a few different tryouts because you never know what is going to happen with a team. We have been around long enough to know that teams fold, coaches leave, pitchers get hurt, strong players quit, people you thought were honest aren't, etc. We loved our team from last year and hoped they could put together another strong team. But if they didn't or something else happened, we wanted our dd to have options.

My daughter and I are new to travel ball and so far we have not had to pay a tryout fee. My question is, if your child is an elite top notch player, is an organization going to pay you to come and tryout?

If they do and you accept it, you jeopardize your daughter's NCAA eligibility....

If you're an elite (and well known) player you won't have to tryout. They'll hand you their business cards at tournaments throughout the year. ;&

You got to love it....if it is done with a wink in the eye, behind closed doors, ....did the tree make a noise when it hit the ground and no one was there to hear it :lmao:

This is why OJ wanted to move to WV because everyone's DNA is similar :yahoo:

I have enjoyed taking the time to read this thread. It has been enlightening to say the least.

Obviously, poor hitting techniques taught to young 10u and 12u girls are damaging them by the age of 16 ( See Cleveland Clinic Studies and Akron Racers building a $10.2 million dollar wellness center next to them in a couple of years open 24/7/365)

Isn't it funny that 80% percent of the GOLD teams are from the south and west of the Mississippi?

Isn't it real funny that 74% percent of colleges and universities are EAST of the Mississippi?

Could the rise in TRUE gold teams in the South and West have to do with population in certain areas.. where girls are serious about ONE sport and ONE sport only because there are SO many girls available at High School "A" or "B" for sports and a limited amount of spots on each sports team? So they try to excel at one sport and not THREE or FOUR at their HS. Some GOLD teams have players that don't play for their HS at all.

It's about time put in by the DD that makes the difference. What does she want. Does she want to practice at home and go to the next level or does she want to hang out with friends and take a chance on getting to the next level.

Work ethics off the field is everything. ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING !!!!

And if there is a GOLD team in OHIO, please let me know who they are as I would love to get the chance to watch them.

It takes money and corporate sponsors to produce a TRUE gold team as teams looking for those Division I scholarships have to go elsewhere and travel plenty to be seen in the same light as the REAL Gold Teams.

Until that occurs in Ohio, and someone goes out and aggresively goes after a corporate sponsor or four... then lets hope the best for the girls that do work hard off the field to better themselves.. get seen.

Never have understood these individual players going to these "events" that gives them the chance to been seen by coaches while batting three times the whole weekend and some cage work.

Sounds like a big rip-off to me in my personal opinion. I want a piece of that action. Let's see... 13 girls to a team X 40 teams X $350 a pop = $182,000.00 plus motel kick backs from "preferred motels" at $10 per room per night...LOL.... Pay some college coach's room ( which you probally don't have to do if you contract with the motel for every ten rooms you sell.. you get one free) and feed them a buffet.

NOW THERE'S A RACKET TO BE IN !!!! :lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::rolleyes:

And Musty... I ABSOLUTELY agree with you.

Take a chance that your skill will get you that scholarship... but as a back up plan... educate yourself to give yourself a better chance !!!

Total agreement!
I work hard informing my players of other scholarship opportunities outside of athletics.
In some cases these additional scholarships can make the difference when it comes down to a coach offering additional monies for athletics!:yahoo:

There are maybe two or three that come close to that fit of the "GOLD" name.

But, you don't see many entering true GOLD events.

Gold teams consist of girls excelling in one sport...SOFTBALL. Year round work.. year round tournaments to be seen. Traveling South in the winter playing events.

Playing Stingrays, GAPPS and Best of the Best in Ohio. Other than that... they are playing out of state.

Ohio had 3 Gold teams last year.
The Ohio Nightmare Gold (2nd year as Gold) is based right here in Central Ohio with girls from many spots outside of Columbus.
You are correct in you comments about the level of travel and commitment by the players, the coaches, and the parents.
We (Nightmare Gold) were at Stingrays last year. Stingrays and Gold Region 9 (the 3 Gold teams in Ohio) at Wright State were the 2 times The Nightmare played in Ohio last year. Come see us!

I'd love to see the Gold teams play actually. I love great softball. I can watch it for hours.

Might not know anyone.. but who cares.. GREAT softball is GREAT softball.

So when you all get together up at Wright State... and there is only three teams... do you all play 7 innings instead of timed games?

I dislike timed games  Ask anyone :D
