Case in point. I would have always said pitcher, but Triplethreat nailed it.
Kasie Kelly 44 K's Holly Tomaszewski 32 K's , 66 K's in one game, 20 innings last year and I watched it end with one swing of the bat a Hr wins the game!

Wave Rider after setting here thinking about things.......... poor defense is what lost the game in the district last year for Fairborn...... even though the very good Pitcher and very good Hitter both had very good games lol....... so maybe just maybe it takes more than those two?........... lol
Just xtra food for thought

I would have to say I would like to have the all around player that can play Catcher. No matter what is said, if you don't have a catcher that can catch your great pitcher then it doesn't count for diddly. Point in case is the Diamond Chix 10u. They have probably one of the most dominate pitchers at the 10u level. They just don't have the great catcher that can catch her. There is a difference between a good and great catcher, even at the 10u level. If you geta chance to see the Explosive Black 10u play, they have 2 great Catchers for the 10u's and 1 is only 9 years old.

The (team player) who is a multi position utility. I have seen some good pitchers who were not team players and it hurt the team spirit.
A player who is the total package on and off the field will lead by example, hopefully they can pitch as well. It is a pitchers sport but offense scores the runs to win.

Does pitching win games or does scoring runs?

I would have to say all around player, because, say if your pitcher is just "ok" your infield can back her up. Every pitcher, even the best ones, gives up a hit every now and then and what happens then?

I love the posts on here keep em coming. The more I read my thread I lean a little to the pitcher also. I got to say though I love an all around player. A great defense can make any pitcher great. Just like one of the earlier post the one who comes to practice and gives 100% all the time is the one we love to have.

Of course, softball is a game with 9 players and many different skills and all are important to the success of a team ... but if you look at it as if you were doing a fantasy draft and had the first pick, I can't imagine that given the choices above, someone would pick anyone other than the stud pitcher first (assuming no attitude or parent issue that is!). The pitcher has the potential to dominate the game and is a major part of at least 21 plate appearances, while the strong hitter only gets up 3-4 times in a game.

How do you take the bat out of that stud hitter Put the right hand out and 4 Balls and that power hitter is catcher bait on first to get left on base or thrown out by stud catcher.

They are all important to have but I would start with the pitcher and build from there. I think we all know how hard it is to find a pitcher let alone two.

Like Boulder said about the district, it takes a whole team!

Its always been a PITCHER/CATCHER combination. "Not one or the other". yes, the pitcher gets the glory since she is the star under the spot light. The catcher gets the job done quietly since she is the field general. I am a little biased since my DD is a catcher. Her glory comes at the end when her pitcher thanks her for calling that perfect game and also carries her bag to the car because she worked her butt off for 7 innings in the hot sun / fully geared.
  • Runners need to be taken off the bags, kept in line by a well timed throw to let them know that they are being watched.
  • Not every Pitch is perfect, they need to be caught, stopped and or dug out of the dirt.
I'll get off my soap box now and root for all on the team, since all must contribute at one point or the other to win a game.

My oldest plays catcher at rec level. My youngest is the pitcher. My oldest at a rec tourney a couple years ago, even though we lost, kept the game closer because of her throwing down runners at 2nd, picking off runners at 3rd, and protecting the plate when that potential run was coming in. Our pitcher wasn't the greatest because she was still learning, but my dd was awesome.

Our HS team will find out. We have 8 of the 9 starters back. All State pitcher graduated. We will need a pitcher to step up. Catcher will help a ton she has a lot of experience at all levels of play.

Power hitter......... now tell me is anyone surprised I picked that option?

Tim...Dan told me. "A man's wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense." Proverbs 19;11

Does that mean we only look to the defense to prevent runs from scoring and play for the international tie breaker and depend on Britt to bunt or slap someone in from second?

Seven innings and 21 outs....who is the most valuable player? If the pitcher struck her out and it is the last out (number 21) then it was her. Of course the catcher who called for the pitch, if she was allowed to call her own game did catch the last out (technically) however the coach who called the pitch that gave the catcher the pitch to throw really deserves the credit, unless the pitchers dad was signaling in pitches to his daughter from the stands because he knows the coach does not know what he is doing anyway would be the most valuable player! Or by default it could be a fly ball, bunt or error on the pitcher for not fielding her position and the kid at second base who has not made a play all day throws to first and she stumbles onto the base for the 21 first out! :lmao:

So it is the pitchers dad who is most valuable by sheer logic or what is termed Bouldersdadism or the 21 first out! Is that like being a Buddhist or Muslim Tim?

Hitter23 prays daily towards the East...that is the direction Yankee stadium is located! Which is his Mecca!

I bet you before the end of the year, Chris will have Doug convinced they need to change the name of the team, Ohio Hawks to Ohio Yankees and we will have a class action lawsuit and pin stripe uniforms and the Bear will lock the thread out! :D

No the question is about value not fear. If the stud hitter doesnt even get to swing she doesnt have an effect on the outcome of the game, unless that walk becomes a run. That is a chance you may choose to take.

K i,ll go with that,,, take the fear out of it........ if a hitter is intentionaly walked in 4 pitches that shows her value as a hitter, and it shows the undervalue of the pitcher.

An outstanding pitcher who is not really good at fielding or hitting

A dynamite power hitter who is just ok at fielding

A well rounded player who can do a great job at several positions
but it only maybe an average batter.

Just curious;&

Maybe we need a rating system from stats that show game winning actions. This will take a Stat Guru. Points for Pitchers% / Points for Catchers effectivness/ Stud batting results and that all around player defense and offense. Plus coaches and parents in stands sending signals!
