Fall ball or not. If they are 14u eligible next season they shouldn't be playing 12u ball. If they are 12u eligible playing up then you will have to take it on the chin. imho
Oh me, Oh my.....new 10U and 12U parents. I lived through that time frame and I too was hyper-sensitive about competitiveness. When your DD gets to be an older 14U, you will start to see the much, much bigger picture.
Fall ball and indoor ball are just to keep the rust knocked off and get repetitions to help improve. Please don't try to make it any more than that. Just let the girls get more reps so that they can improve.
There is a time for competitive leagues/tournaments and there is a time for just getting the girls more reps. I believe that when TDs make these Fall and Indoor tournaments a "Qualifier", they are taking away reps from girls that could have participated but due to sanctioning roster rules, they could not participate.
Part of the bigger picture is to get these girls ready to showcase their skills to college coaches.
Girls are past being 12u eligible. Played first year of 14u last year.
WUBBA--if Bear will allow it, then OUT the team and the fall ball league. Been there having "slightly too old" players just "working on thier games" beating up on your sometimes 4 year younger kids who have never seen live pitching before. I have noticed way too often the "just **** it up and play attitude" can cause huge safety issues--if a 10Ugirl is coming off a 35mph machine and runs into a good 14U pitching a live 50, then all kinds of bad things can start. And unless the girls here are different, they tend to get gunshy after being hit a time or two......Finally, too many people seem to assume the other coaches aren't ultracompetitive jerks who don't care if your kids get hurt or hate the game because there's are getting the glory. Again I have sipped the bitter cup with 2 daughters now jumping from the pitching machine to girls 3 or 4 years older chucking it at them. How quickly we forget.
When we were kids, we just rode our bikes around and rounded up the gang for a game on a vacant lot somewhere. We were ALL ages, from 9 - 10 up through 14-15. I grew up in the same neighborhood with Donna Newberry (Muskingum coach), and remember clearly how she could tackle my older brother - she was TOUGH! Somehow, the older kids just knew enough to NOT smear the little ones. It was common sense. Boys and girls ALL played together, and we had FUN! We would intentionally let the little kids get on base by acting like we missed a grounder, etc.
The difference between then and now is that adults organize the neighborhood games FOR the kids - and TRY to set the rules thinking they are making it "safe and fun" for the kids. Parents - step back, take a deep breath, and encourage your kids to play their OWN games - without a bunch of idiots interfering! My, how times have changed!!
