Fall ball or not. If they are 14u eligible next season they shouldn't be playing 12u ball. If they are 12u eligible playing up then you will have to take it on the chin. imho

Oh me, Oh my.....new 10U and 12U parents. I lived through that time frame and I too was hyper-sensitive about competitiveness. When your DD gets to be an older 14U, you will start to see the much, much bigger picture.

Fall ball and indoor ball are just to keep the rust knocked off and get repetitions to help improve. Please don't try to make it any more than that. Just let the girls get more reps so that they can improve.

There is a time for competitive leagues/tournaments and there is a time for just getting the girls more reps. I believe that when TDs make these Fall and Indoor tournaments a "Qualifier", they are taking away reps from girls that could have participated but due to sanctioning roster rules, they could not participate.

Part of the bigger picture is to get these girls ready to showcase their skills to college coaches.

Really good points, I am living it first hand. My oldest DD is playing 18U, she has been playing showcases for a few years. I am also coaching a 10U team, I am at both extremes and its very noticable.

If you want to know what level is playing on what field, look at the back stop. The more parents behind the back stop the younger the kids playing :lmao:

As a coach everyone is at their wits end by the end of summer so in the fall I would say just play whatever team is on the field and not worry about it. You are really just staying sharp and working on things anyway. Save your energy for all the bonehead umpire calls you will get this summer.

Sometimes things are just not fair. Just play tough and stick it out. Who knows, maybe seeing the tougher pitching will help the younger kids.

WUBBA--if Bear will allow it, then OUT the team and the fall ball league. Been there having "slightly too old" players just "working on thier games" beating up on your sometimes 4 year younger kids who have never seen live pitching before. I have noticed way too often the "just **** it up and play attitude" can cause huge safety issues--if a 10Ugirl is coming off a 35mph machine and runs into a good 14U pitching a live 50, then all kinds of bad things can start. And unless the girls here are different, they tend to get gunshy after being hit a time or two......Finally, too many people seem to assume the other coaches aren't ultracompetitive jerks who don't care if your kids get hurt or hate the game because there's are getting the glory. Again I have sipped the bitter cup with 2 daughters now jumping from the pitching machine to girls 3 or 4 years older chucking it at them. How quickly we forget.

I can understand a 12U eligible player who is moving up to 14U next year playing in a 12U fall tournament (though, while legal, I really don't think it is consistent with the Ohio fastpitch culture, which pretty much assumes that players on a fall team qualifying for 2010 Eastern Nationals would be eligible to play in those Nationals), but if these are girls who are no longer 12U eligible, what the heck are they doing playing in that division? You can talk all you want about fall ball just being for knocking the rust off, but this is just not fair to teams who are honoring the age divisions. They deserve to be able to see how they stack up against other teams in the age division and they don't deserve to get humiliated by pitchers that could be four years older than them. If fall ball is for fun, it sure isn't fun to be that young facing pitchers with some serious years of travel ball under their belt.

cgs, I'm with you. Is it restricted to pitchers only or...? What if a catcher or SS or OF wants to get some time in while their soon to be older team is not playing? Just saying...

In the past years and fall leagues that I have delt with there were no trophies and no pressure just teams that wanted to have more play time and work on new players. There is nothing wrong with tournaments in fall or skilled league play but the fall has always been for the fun of the sport. Keep them playing ball at what ever level they want but have fun!

If your dd is in 10U I hope she can hit 50mph balls. She should be hitting 50-55 on the machine at 10U. We saw quite a few 50mph 10 year old pitchers. At 14 they should be throwing alot faster than 50 and should have enough control that they aren't hitting 3-4 people a game, otherwise they need a new 14U pitcher. By 14U the average speed should be 55-56, with control.

I like to have my team face the faster pitchers. It prepares them for what they will see in the tournaments. They need to be able to time all the different speeds so the more they see the better they will get.

This fall ball league is also a USSSA qualifier and winners do recieve trophies at first and second. My DD is a fine ball player and can hit what is thrown at her - being pitched or off the machine. What I am talking about is basic ethics and the ideals that I think a team should have when it comes to the game. Maybe I have this all wrong and should just mind my own business but I felt like the other eight teams who are playing by the rules and trying to do the right thing should not lose an opportunity because of one team who does not follow the published rules.

If it is a Utrip qualifier and the older girls aren't 12U eligible, let the Utrip state rep know. Berth should go to the team that is 12U qualified for 2009.

I could be wrong here with U-trip but in order to keep the birth for 2010 from a fall league or fall tournament is have 1/2 the roster return for 2010 to keep your birth.

Judging by your posts, Im guessing your from the East side of Cleveland......Here is what i know about a fall league in that area for an older age group .......

  • No rosters were ever turned in......
  • There is allowed playing down to not forfeit games
  • Some teams were going to drop out if they werent allowed older players, with 1 week notice of league start what do you expect
My daughter played 14u this year......She also played some games at 16-18U to help teams from forfeiting and also played one game at 12u (she is still 12u elgibile) since they were short if the game went to long as a player had to leave. She only batted and struck out twice, yeah she was a big help huh ???? lol.....

It's fall ball, nothing too serious, and the teams playing around with rosters are not doing themselves a favor come spring when it really matters.

Heck i seen a girl who tried out for our team who is 13 played 12u fall ball since her 14u team didnt play....from the games i saw it didnt matter much at all.....

I guess the only part i agree with, dont get mad at the teams if the league doesnt enforce anything.........the league is run for the girls so they all get in the most innings possible....dont expect by the book, no holds barred in that league......it's not going to happen

Lot of interestng post. WE are in a fall ball leauge, no trophies or qualifier. My team personally; I am looking what to work on in the winter. We had practices for the last two months, I rarely touch on hitting, I want to take advantage of outside and work on hitting throughout the winter. No doubt in the fall games we are being agressive and have the win attitude; but, in my mind I have girls that I want to try in certain positions and it is what it is in the game; I want to see what they have or want I need to work on with them in winter. With that said it definitly cost us a game or two, but it is fall ball. There are choices that I made during fall ball that I probably would not have made in a qualifing tourney. Heck, some of my parents are thinking what are you doing (because they want to win it all). With other sports being played at the same time, I am sure all the teams struggle some weekends to fill a team, I want to play not sit at home idle.

When we were kids, we just rode our bikes around and rounded up the gang for a game on a vacant lot somewhere. We were ALL ages, from 9 - 10 up through 14-15. I grew up in the same neighborhood with Donna Newberry (Muskingum coach), and remember clearly how she could tackle my older brother - she was TOUGH! Somehow, the older kids just knew enough to NOT smear the little ones. It was common sense. Boys and girls ALL played together, and we had FUN! We would intentionally let the little kids get on base by acting like we missed a grounder, etc.

The difference between then and now is that adults organize the neighborhood games FOR the kids - and TRY to set the rules thinking they are making it "safe and fun" for the kids. Parents - step back, take a deep breath, and encourage your kids to play their OWN games - without a bunch of idiots interfering! My, how times have changed!!

Very well said...if we could only go back in time
