When an organization is so desperate.......

I don't post here much, but I would like to hear from some seasoned people and coaches out there. We had our second tryout today, for the second time we heard from parents (attending) telling us that another local organization was telling players that if they weren't offered a spot immediately that we didn't want their DD and they should sign with them right now. We heard their tryout was a joke, mainly just a player grab and scare session that they will be left with nowhere to play if they didn't sign now. Are some of these organizations so desperate to pay their mortgage and car payments that that is what they resort to? Now I'm not knocking for profit organizations (which we are not) at all. But come on scaring these kids into saying yes or else? Is that what it this has evolved into, Lies and scaring? What happened to it's for the girls and helping them learn and advance? Maybe that's outdated today....... Well just wondering what some others thought. Good luck to everyone in the new season.

SMH....pressure is a metaphor to run. Each family knows their needs to commit. Ask them their plans necessary to make a healthy commitment and then see what compromise if any is needed. Desperation is a sign of bad things to come. Remember, players AND Orgs/coaches are trying out for each other. It IS a 2-way street.

Why is it every year this organization pokes at another one? I believe this is the 3rd year in a row. If it isn't the same org this year, that's what I think it's become. All it does has given you is a black eye.

I think Lester makes a very good point that gets lost at times. Coaches and organizations are trying out for you. See how a tryout is ran, gauge efficiency and it will give you a good idea of what practices will look like.

A black eye is right. That's why the questions were asked. Why do they need to do this to others?

It sounds like this other local organization has found the tools that are most useful and self serving to them, instilling fear and desperation.
You hope this Isn't the methods they use to coach and teach these young girls, that would be the saddest part of this scenario.
Good luck to the Wildcats on recruiting new talent, they are a good organization with some very good coaches.

I also agree with Lester,, pressure is a red flag.. i have always told my dd that its like a one year contract, her with the team and the team with her... when we told our previous team that she wasn't returning... the coach replied "well, tell her she can still go fishing with us,,,, i said don't worry- she will".... lol ..... pdad7

As a newbie going through my daughter's first tryout season, I have heard similar things. In fact, I was under the impression that this was true. In fact, one of the newbie advice threads said someting to the effect of: when the tryout is over the coach will let you know if she/she is interested. So we have been under the impression that no news the day of the tryout is bad news. That has caused serious stress!
Perhaps some coaches work that way and some don't? I guess the only way to not have to worry about it is to knock their socks off and get an offer the first time out! Good luck to all of the other first time players and parents!

Maybe it's just the fact that our dd is moving up to 18U and is still rehabbing a lingering injury, but we've learned in her 7-8 years in travel ball, that there will be a team needing what your dd can offer. Granted it's a lot nicer (easier on the parents) to go to one of the first tryouts and get offered right away, but you'll always find a team. This year dd can't help it -- 2013 team is staying at 16U and she'll have to wait until she's physically ready to start tryouts.

Lester is spot on. Coaches are absolutely trying out for you. We are working to convince you that your best choice is with his or her team, if she has the skills and potential that suits that team's needs.
This is a very stressful time of year for players, coaches and parents.
The umpires are the only ones getting a break!

Our Org finished tryouts this weekend and made calls Sunday night. By Monday it is all set and they move forward.

I talked with others and they are told it could be up to a week before they call. How the heck does that make sense?

Most likely that they have another tryout or privates and are looking for better players.

That's it.

It's a delicate balancing act between holding out for better players and losing the potential "adequate" ones that you could sign today.

I get tired of fielding questions about other teams that bad mouth ours. I also get tired of trying to defend the lies other coaches are claiming here and at tryouts. Come on your ganna play Lasers, Stingrays, GAPPS, Ohio-Penn, Metro, PGF Qualifiers, and ASA "A" States? Well a lot of those are Invitation only and thats a pretty nasty looking schedule. My favorite are those stating we are going to CA for PGF. Those are all goals for teams but in reality that type of schedule is reserved for a select few and difficult to come through on. Also, some of these teams have never played that type of schedule. Why don't coaches just be truthful and say "I can't speak on that team because I don't really know them" or "Our goals are to play high level Showcases but they are invitation only type events."? Over sellng your team is ridiculous and btw some of those teams do manage to get in a few of those tournaments. Some do well but others, well you kno what happens. Being from CA all I have to say is good luck in PGF Nationals, if you get there.
