In reality, the HS season doesn't end officially till June 14th. So if a HS wanted to they could keep from releasing a player until that date, can't think of any reason to do that....but.

Most coaches and teams usually release their players after they are knocked out of the tournament and their regular season schedule is complete. Anywhere from the middle of May, till after the HS tournament is complete, which is June 7th.

I hear that phrase "releasing players" used alot.

The interscholastic rules apply until the last contest is played or the season end date, whichever comes first. Anotherwords, your team goes 7-13, does not enter any playoffs and plays its last game on May 13th. On May 14th your non-interscholastic rules apply for that particular player. Ive never run across any requirement in OSHAA rules that says a player needs to be "released" by a HS coach. If this is true what paperwork is used to document this? Im kinda thinking this has been one of those rule myths that crop up now n' then due to the ambiquity in alot of the HS rules.

Could you point me to that rule?

Thank You!

There is no form that needs to be filled out, I guess you would have to say that it is a verbal release. ?It's really one of those unwritten rules, that I doubt needs to be covered very often.

I will give you an example, that happened to me and my HS team from last year, and think that it is probably the best reason a HS coach should give the verbal release.

We had played, and lost our Sectional final game, and thought that our season was over. ?We had 3 league games that that had been canceled, but with previous talks to the AD, we were unsure if they would have to be made up, because none of the games would have decided the league championship. ?Well the League Commisioner stated that one of the games would have to be played, because it had a bearing on the "All League" trophy. ?The team we had to play, had an opportunity to win this trophy, so the game must be played. ?Basically our season was over, but a week later we were still playing games. ?
Had I told the girls our season was over, and the travel girls had went back to their travel teams, and played or practiced with them, they would have been ineligible to play. ?So that is why it's important to make sure your season is over, and you verbally release those players.

Thats a good example LK, thank you.

My understanding has been that the onus is basically on the travelball player to discover.... is the high school season completely over? or isnt it?.. before commencing non-interscholastic play. The HS coach can go along way toward making this go without a hitch by, as you stated, telling the team there done with the year. I would think an ethical coach would do this to prevent problems.

thanks

Does this apply to the 7th graders also?

If the Jr. High team is sponsored by the school, yes. If it is a club team, no.
