We live in the Columbus area and are looking for somewhere to take dd to practice 3 times a week indoors during the winter. She takes lessons in Worthington, however, that site is not available on her "off" days to practice with dad. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!! :)

Hey P-mom--- I don't live in the Columbus area, but here are a few suggestions that would apply wherever you pitching gals live.

The highschool gyms are always booked solid in the cold weather months.

We had some success with contacting elementary and jr. highs for gym time. The janitorial staff is there in the evenings and you can usually get a few time slots working around basketball.

You can also check with the churches in your area. Some have gyms, rec areas, even the basement, etc, and may be able to help you out.

Hope this helps,

kjbm

Stop in one of the Cols. Rec. centers and talk DIRECTLY to the director. We used Tuttle quite frequently. The catch for us was we had to get there right after school - 3:30 ish. We had a good solid hour in the gym - for free!

Agree about the school gyms. Our middle & high school gyms were always booked solid in the fall/winter.

Great question. The schools are the best option. Check the school district bylaws about using the facilities. Your HS team probably gets at least one night a week for open gym during the winter. You should be able to get into the gym at that time and grab a corner for pitching. Read the OHSAA rules on open gyms so you're prepared to force the issue. Sometimes the best path to using a school is to go through an employee (teacher). So if you know one, try that route.

Renting space at big league or all stars can be expensive but it is an option.

If she attends Worthington schools, consult the softball coach too, he might know what his HS pitchers are doing.

Other option, find someone with a heated barn and ask about using it. I know the Buckeye Heat used to use a barn in Powell that was set up for softball and fairly inexpensive.

Good luck and share any success you have with the rest of us.

We utilize Swing Away Batting Cages in Mt. Vernon Ohio for the Stingrays. I happen to own the facility as well. We have 3 pitching lanes a tight Home to second lane and roughly 2500 SQ Ft of open space good for Ground Work. Obviously there are 5 automated hitting lanes as well at various speeds. Accomidates both Baseball and Softball. The cost is very reasonable for team rentals as well as Lane rentals. Travel teams generally get charged anywhere from 3-5 dollars per player for a 1-2 hour block of time (Providing there are 10 players) and the lane rental is $10-$15 per 1/2 hour or longer if not pre-rented. All three of our Stingray 12U pitchers practice in the location along with a few from the Heat and other Travel Teams. If you have any questions please call Ed Chaney GM for Swing Away(740-397-bats (2287) for more information. This goes for any Travel teams that are in need of a location for winter workouts. Thank you

Went there last night and signed up for a month. Great facility to practice pitching and hitting. This spot will fill up fast this winter.

It is wonderful to have this facility available in Mount Vernon. Now if they could "just" add on an indoor field. :p We have two Buckeye Heat 95 players from Mount Vernon (as, in fact, are we) and have used (and will continue to use) the facilities at Swing Away.

If you are in the Licking County / Pataskala area there is a facility that has pitching lanes, batting cages, etc. I forget the exact name but their phone number is 740 964-2243. They are just south of Broad St / SR16 on York Rd which is 2-3 miles east of Pataskala.

DD used the muti-purpose/gym at our church/school...didn't cost anything and she was able to utilize it in the evenings whenever it was not in use.
