The city of Parma decided to pull the fields for this tourney? I have been to this tourney more than once and it seems that with the large attendance, there had to be money flowing into local businesses. Doesn't sound like the powers that be made the best decision.

Wow looks like numbers are way down from the past.

Do you think not being a ASA eastern tournament hurt numbers?

I do, but that is ok. I try to put on the best tournament for the girls, families and fans. I do not see why any tournament should do an ASA Eastern Qualifier anymore. Any team can go to any Eastern they want to, as long as the team is ASA Registered. Again it can only hurt players or teams with (the dredded) roster issues for Eastern Nationals

Warren:

There was a time, for sure, when any team who was registered with Ohio ASA could go to ASA Easterns. Whether that is still true is a question that I have been trying to get answered for a couple of years now.

This is what the ASA Code, Article 516, Section H says about eligible teams for territory nationals:

"01. Eligible Teams. All teams within an ASA National Championship Finals
Territory that have not qualified for an ASA / USA Junior Olympic Girls’ Class
A Fast Pitch National Championship are eligible to qualify for the ASA
National Championship Finals Tournament through their local association.
Teams may play in their closest National Championship.
[ Ineligible. Any team that has qualified for an ASA / USA Junior Olympic
Girls’ Fast Pitch National Championship is not eligible to participate in an
ASA National Championship Finals Tournament. ]"

As with so many of the ASA Code provisions, this section is ambiguous. Does it mean that any member of the ASA local association qualifies for the relevant territory nationals, or does it mean that the ASA local association can establish further qualification conditions such as the ASA Eastern Nationals qualifier tournaments?

As I said, this is a question that I began asking two years ago. This year it is not relevant for our team but come fall I'll be scratching my head about it again.

I think that our softball community deserves a precise answer to this question. If the answer is, "you must qualify through a designated ASA Eastern qualifying tournament", that is fine. The additional costs for a tournament TD to have a qualifier and the additional concerns for a team to pay attention to roster eligibility issues that are created by playing in Championship Play (a defined term under the Code that includes the Eastern National qualifier tournaments) would probably be justified if earning a berth through a qualifier is required.

I am a lawyer by training and in the 32 years that I practiced I dealt with many statutes and regulations having some pretty poorly drafted provisions (not the least, the United States Bankruptcy Code). But I have to say that the ASA Code ranks right up there for its ambiguous and complex provisions. (Cliff Killian, who is extremely knowledgeable about the ASA Code, takes the position that the Code is accessible to all coaches, but on that point I will just have to agree to disagree).

On such a basic question as whether it is necessary to win a berth to ASA Eastern Nationals through a qualifier tournament, we in Ohio should be able to get an answer. If anyone out there has received an answer, please let us know.

I have been told in the last last few years by Warren Jones and if you call any of the Eastern National TD they too will tell you that if you are an ASA Registered team and play in ASA Tournaments you can go to the eastern "A" or "B" Nationals. Pay the fee and go. I have in the past sent teams within our own organization that never qualified but were gladly accept to the nationals.

Now ASA Code is very specific about the "B" Nationals:

d.
Girls? Class B Fast Pitch. Teams and players who participate in
Class A tournaments, or higher, that lead to a National Championship
Finals, shall not be eligible to participate in the Class B competition.
Girls? Class B teams must be made up of players who participate in the
same league.

Like this one is ever followed i have seen just about every tournament team that (DO NOT PLAY IN A LEAGUE) send there younger teams to "B" Nationals. But the rule says "TEAMS MUST BE"

So bottom line you need to quailify for ASA/USA Which is how it needs to be, any other nationals anyone can go to them, which i think it should be as well. But the "B" nationals should follow the rule to all the same league players to give the league players and all star teams more equal balance.

True tournament teams should stick to;
if quailified ASA/USA if not then go to "A" only... there should be NO OPTION for "B" Nationals for true travel teams.

Thanks Todd. I hope that we can get written confirmation from Warren Jones before next fall that the Code continues to be interpreted to allow any State of Ohio ASA sanctioned team to enter Eastern Nationals. That would save us a few weekends in the fall where we could be practicing or entering a showcase instead of trying to earn a berth through a qualifier. We like to save our summer schedule for ASA/USA qualifiers and the showcases, should we be fortunate enough to get showcase invitations.

I like your suggestion that we call Eastern Nationals TDs this summer to confirm your understanding. But we will also email Warren, again, to try to confirm that earning a berth through a qualifier is not necessary.

Carol
I called a Eastern ASA TD and, he told me that not all states have qualifiers for ASA Easterns, but if your state has them you must play in them and earn a birth to go to Easterns, Northerns, Southerns or Western. He can not just let you come because you are a ASA registered team. He was very clear on this and Warren Jones said same thing.

Thank you so much for the update Warren. This totally changes the landscape, both from the standpoint of a team and from the standpoint of a TD.
