To say that it was a wild weekend would be an understatement... there were 4 or more waves of rain that came thru. Tim worked his tail off to get the diamonds playable, he brought in the 'copter around midnight Sat to blow the lakes of the diamonds.

For the 10 and 12u's - Sat was a total washout - I think 1 12u game was played. Between all the washouts - several teams bailed out so all the 10 and 12 bracket's had to be re-done on Sunday.

12u - SDS, Ohio Hawks and OFC Heat remained... they did a 2 game, pool followed by dbl-elimination. 1/2 way through the dbl-elmin SDS pulled out so the HEAT took first and the Hawks second.

10u - 5 teams hung in, the Ohio Wave pulled out on Sat. The team were Hawks, Baseburners, Ohio Classic, Highland Heat and the Southern Ohio Express (SOX).

We ended up playing a dbl elim bracket that ended with us, Ohio Hawks losing 4-2 to the Baseburners at 1am this morning...

Games: Winner - and the approx score
Baseburners vs Ohio Hawks: Baseburners 6-1
SOX vs Highland Heat: Highland Heat
Ohio Hawks vs Sox : Ohio Hawks 10-1?
Baseburners vs Ohio Classic: Baseburners
Ohio Hawks vs Highland Heat: Ohio Hawks 12-4
Ohio Hawks vs Ohio Classic: Ohio Hawks 3-0
Baseburners vs Ohio Hawks: Ohio Hawks 3-1
Baseburners vs Ohio Hawks: Baseburners 4-2 - at 1am Sunday morning!

Our 10u Hawks won 4 straight before falling to the baseburners out of portsmouth - they are a very good team - we had back to back outstanding games - their #1 pitcher and our #1 battled it out for 3 hours over 2 games...

Thank you Doug for the nice comment...... After getting 4 hours sleep in four days..... ?As Doug said, the helicopter was used to blow water off the fields or to a certain low point where we could sump pump it off the fields so we could open the fields to begin the drying process (along with a hundred bags of diamond dry) and parents who were absolutely wonderful from these teams that helped in raking and preparing for play . ?We had seven (7) dimaonds to deal with. ?Thank you again.

Some are happy, some are not. ?But, I have learned rain delays cause that sometimes. ?We gave it everything we had to get the fields up and running. ?Many tournaments around the area was cancelled. ?We were not.

As a parent and scorekeeper for the Ohio Hawks 12U, I would like to say thank you to the Sudden Death and OFC Heat's Blast teams for making a bad situation a little more bearable. These three teams basically ran their own tournament and came to agreements that best suited theirs and the other teams.

It was sad to see the Blast go undefeated and not get more of a show with the trophy presentation, wish we could do that over again, so I could clap for the young ladies. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

These were very good, close games on Sunday and the girls and coaches should all be proud of very tiring circumstances and still be able to smile while leaving.

Again, thanks and congrats to all for making Sunday more bearable!!! :)

Good Job Tim!!
Everyone needs to be thankful that this TD did the best he could. others out there didn't even try and the only reason that some tournaments continued was thanks to the parents, coaches, and players preparing a couple of fields to continue on. No field maintenance workers at all. park crew took care of one time in the morning. that was it. Sunday we played fields undrug and no lines at all. don't complain about no batters boxes., try no foul lines and umpires that didn't know the difference between fair/foul anyway. let alone thinking there was a DH/flex. when really USFA has EP and DEFO. they had all their sanctions interchanged. I didn't have the heart to explain it was DP/Flex

Be thankful of Tim. He is a dieing breed!!! We'll see him in the fall for sure!!

Just to let everyone know, we didn't just drop out. We played all our pool play games. Our bracket was originally suppose to be a double elimination but hey.... we were suppose to start on Saturday as well.

Even though the timming wasn't right..... the Blast coaches had asked if we wanted to go to single elimation to prevent us from being there until 1 o'clock in the morning (like the 10U) I was in agreement, the other team was not. We won our first bracket play game. That would had eliminated the other team. Since the other team wanted to stay and play, I suggested to the Blast coaches that our game could be the single elimination game, and the winner could play the Hawks in the Championship. The Blast coaches said no because the Hawks hadn't won a game all day. I then said that after our game(win or lose) we were done and they could play the Hawks. We lost that game 3-2. That should have been the Championship game.

The only reason I am saying this is because that the post earlier made it sound as if we just packed up and left. We didn't. The coaches couldn't come to an agreement so we decided we would step up and let the other two teams compete in one more game instead of dragging it out for three more game. This was at 7:30pm.

Thank you to the OFC Heat Blast and the Ohio Hawks for hanging in there on Sunday and letting us get a couple game in.

Chris...........

You all were admirable in what u did. You were thinking of everyone involved instead of just your team.

Sad part is, this should not have been put into the coaches hands in the first place. The TD should have set the format first thing in the morning and stayed with it, unless more bad weather came through, which it did not.

Putting it in the coaches hands only leads to hard feelings and misinterpretations......... this weekend was chaos and not just because of the weather.

Thank you.... I hope my post didn't come across the wrong way to anyone. All three teams in our group did everything we could possibe to play on Sunday. I thought it just sounded bad that someone said we just dropped out half way through the tournament.

I agree that it shouldn't have been in the coaches hands. I think all the coaches just stepped up and decided this is whats going to happen. It they hadn't of, we would probaly still be waiting to play. It was a long weekend for everyone involved and that too was a deciding factor for what we did.

We had agreat time playing the few games that we played. Thanks again to the OFC Heat Blast and the Ohio Hawks for getting in what games we did get in.

Chris.. did not mean to imply that you packed it up but I don't think it ever was anything but a dbl-elim for Sunday - that is what we (10U's) were presented with as well.

It is not up to the coaches to decide to cut it short - it is the TD's and he set the 10 and 12's to dbl-elmin. Tim was cooked by that time - he had been up 3 straight days .. I talked to him around 6pm and he was worn out.

Still, it is up to each team to decide if they want to stick it out.. our 10u's, the Classics and the baseburners (with a 2 hr drive home) all decided to do it.. it turned out that it was the best 4 consecutive games among 3 teams that I have seen played all year. The 12u SDS/Hawk game was a great one too from what I saw - tie breaker in the 8th?

As a Hawks coach, I would say this regardless of the team involved, but as I understand it - it was propsed that it be be shortened it to a single elim after 1 team (hawks) already had a loss - tossing them out ... that surprises me really.. but I guess had the hawks parents and players had enough and wanted to go home they could have taken that option and it would not have mattered.

it was a bad weekend for softball - the Twisters trny was a mess too... all in all it looks like some good games were played and the best made out of a bad situation.

In the 12u "A" division, no one wanted the berth or like the Blast ... already had one. It was set for a double elimination and if you guys come to the decision, as I was told, to go another direction in scheduling... then of course I was happy to meet your needs and decision as a whole. Umpire asked and I told him to let the teams decide based on how long they wanted to stay. Every other division went with the double eliminations and played until 1 am on MOnday morning. I guess they didn't mind to stay and play ball.... and from the screams of the crowds... sounds to me they had a great time.

Where did you play Rhino Guy ? I looked around the board and didn't see where you were at over the weekend. The helicopter was great but expensive...lol... but with the crown of the diamonds not correct... he fought to get the water over the crown. If there had been a correct crown to the diamonds..... No pumping would have been needed and the extra time could have been spent drying the larger fields. The big diamonds were shot and hard to get up and going. We got the back diamond up and then an umpire did a no show and it left the brackets going longer than necessary... as we could have used another diamond. But, you know I wanted more than ever... to go take her place as an umpire so we could shorten the time of the tournament.. but I am not allowed to as TD and nobody could be reached to see if it could come under "emergency conditions" and I could umpire. But, NSA Ohio UIC refuses to issue me a license anyway. I just got my check back from them yesterday And I can't wait to see you this Fall as well. The other Stingray team is coming and secured their date in October via e-mail Friday. Probally NAFA tournament. I have a meeting with them soon. And give more prizes besides the uniforms.... since their fees aren't so high for TD's. I'm working on that pitching machine for first place..... lol... you know me... thinking out of the box.....

Played in Dayton. Miami Valley Regional USFA. never do that again.
can't blame that one on the rain. Don't go that direction.

sorry to hear about the NSA. thought that would have been a good direction.

Looking forward to coming in the fall. Have to wait to see after tryouts. don't want to secure a spot and have to drop out due to lack of players. you know what I mean. Would love to win a pitching machine and uniforms for the girls. They have to want to do it themselves though. I can only coach them how to do it, can't do it for them. LOL

See you in the fall. I am sure.

I just wanted to thank the coaches and dads of the U12 Blast team for all their hard work getting the field ready so games could be played. When we arrived at 8:00 am nothing was being done to try and get the fields ready. They were absolutely horrible. After more than 4 hours of work with very little help from anyone else, we were finally able to take the field for the start of a very long day.

As far as staying until 1:00 in the morning, it was outrageous that it came to that for some teams. The Sudden Death Coach made a decision to leave early with the best interest of his girls in mind. Those girls were exhausted and the one pitcher seemed hurt. These are young girls, some of whom were there at 8:00am. Beyond the girls, most parents had to work the next day. In the corporate world calling off b/c you were at a softball game half the night is unacceptable.

It was about 7:30 when we finally got most of the water off and began opening diamonds when the tractor could get on. The little ones were the easiest to get on with the tractor. and then the big one in the back. 2 inches of rain in 45 mintues. We pumped and helicoptered the diamonds until around 7:15 am. Which on the delay, the game were on a two hours and it gave us the time needed to even get equipment on the fields with a 10 am start time. Parents were great. Wilmington businesses is getting ready to make proper diamonds for drainage with their donations. Major donations. Getting a tractor on the diamonds after three days of off and on thundstorms is tough sometime.
