Withdrawal pains...

Well, I went through my first late summer and fall as an ex coach. You would think that I would be getting over the fact that I am not coaching anymore. That is not happening. I miss coaching. That simple fact makes it very difficult for me to read posts on OFC anymore. I loved coaching. It was the most rewarding and fun experience that I've had in my life. I would like to do it over again.

For those who are coaching now... enjoy each and every minute. One day, it will be over. I do have one thing that is a blessing... I have the wonderful memories. OK... I am done... carry on.

Anytime you want to get a coaching fix your more then welcome to come and be a guest coach at my 10u practice. I use vet retired coaches who want to get out there for a day a few times a year.

With all the teams from rec. to travel to high school I would think there should be no problem finding a place to donate your time. Even if it is just working with hitting or position specific drills, that extra one on one coach that a team has is irreplaceable. Then there is always little league and mechanics are mechanics. This past summer I just wanted to work with hitting on my son's team and due to the managers job moving him to swing shift and no one else willing to take over I ended up managing the team to keep it together. For a first year put together team there was to much talent to let the team fold due to no manager and force all the boys on to teams with full roosters already. It would have been impossible to do without all the good help of assistant coaches. You can't say enough about a volunteer.

I hope you find what seems to be missing right now.

I feel you Johnnies, it isn't something you can just walk away from without feeling the withdrawl pain. Once you get that coaching bug, there is no getting rid of it and there is no substitute for it.

The worst part about retirement is when you join the fans in the stands, you find yourself saying things out loud like "Why are they bunting here?" or "That girl's throwing motion is all messed up" or "Why would you intentionally walk her with #4 hitter on deck?" While your wife keeps telling you through gritted teeth to be quiet... :D

I was out of the game for about two years due to time limitations from my job. It definitely created a void in my life. I am very thankful I was able to get back into the coaching game! Life is exciting again... and nerve-wracking and frustrating and inspiring and fulfilling and infuriating. You know...all those emotions we coaches go through on a daily basis. ;)

I am already dreading that transition. My last daughter is moving onto to college next fall. I am doing a lot of stuff for the last time during this upcoming season(s).

I am thinking about adopting a 10 year old left handed pitcher, maybe twins.

Your coaching legacy will be remembered for years to come johnnies. You know you can always come and be a part of any team of mine. I would love it actually, that way I could sit back and watch greatness at work. Have a nice retirement and I hope all is going well for you. Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year!!!

Hey johnnies, have you considered doing some umpiring------just a few games a week? Would be a great excuse to hang around the fields.
