Had a coach from the.... initials (MCB) 13u team call a few girls from my organization (2 different teams) and tried to talk them in on ditching there team and come and play for them this weekend because they are short on players. Of course they said no but what is everyones thought on this... It's one thing to ask if they are NOT playing, but to knowingly try to get a girl when you know she plays is playing is wrong

Thanks

Shon

Normally don't allow even the initials, but in this case given the nature of the offense.....

Well, we played the MCB 13U this past weekend and they finished with 8 kids due to injury. They are going to Akron for the USSSA 13U WS this week. Hopefully, it was just a misunderstanding. Knowing the coach, I think he was probably just for looking for players who were off and wanted to sub rather than trying to steal a player and was just asking about their availability.

I hope that's the case, because it don't get any lower than that

Unfortunately this happens every year. Everyone condemns it in threads but the very next weekend some of the most highly regarded coaches in Central Ohio are approaching kids to switch teams, sometimes dragging some of their own players in tow for more effect. Talk about manipulation....and what an insult to the girls already on the roster.

There are a few really low-down organizations out there who will do anything to win a game.

Not saying this is the case, sure hope not, but he should have been calling the coach, not the players. jmho

Ok when is it acceptable to talk to a player about NEXT year and tryouts? Is it classless to say "Hey you are a nice player, I would like to see you at our tryouts." When does open season begin? We played against a nice speedy lefty slapper that I really wanted to talk to this past weekend about tryouts but didn't.

First, if the initial post is accurate, shame on the coach for knowing that these players had a team tournament and asking them to jump ship. One of the GREAT things about OFC is that you can advertise for a guest player. And I think that everyone's assumption is that any players responding are available because they are off that weekend, had their team fold, are wanting to see what travel ball is like, etc. etc. If any responder to our guest post ever said she was going AWOL from her team for the weekend, we would not take her as a guest player.

Second, Rich's question is a really hard one. I think it is marginally ok to say "Hey, if you are thinking about trying out for a different team in August, I'd be really happy to see you at our tryouts."

I know the coach and would give him the benefit of the doubt without knowing any details. Good coach and runs a first class team.

I used to believe you should wait until after Nationals to talk about next year, but last year I learned that then it was too late. I don't think there is anything wrong with saying hope to see you at tryouts for next year, as long as it doesn't affect the current season.

I think anytime you see a nice player you would like to have on your team next year you have the right to approach her. It is up to the current coach/team to provide a team/program that the player will not want to leave. IMO. However, in my case this was not the case. Coach new of our tournament and tried to persuade anyway.. not right

All right cgs, lets get something straight right now. I AM NOT RICH, I'm Mike!!!!! He coaches the 16U team. His screen name is just "Ohio Wave." This is almost as bad as getting confused for Quakerflake.:D

If you are a good coach and do your job well than you really don't have to worry about anything. I have people approach my players all the time, I even know of a few whom I'd consider friends who are trying to get some of my players to their try-outs and teams next year. I just assume that they can't develop players on their own so they have to poach from other teams. Those players that they do get will be gone next year when they find themselves on a team with a coach who can't coach. If a team loses it's players EVERY year, it should throw up a red flag to all prospective try-outs that the coaching staff isn't all it's cracked up to be.

I have heard wonderful things about MCB 13U coach from former players, hitting coach, catching coach, and parents.

I think the players coach/organization should be approached about pick ups first. Some players on sanctioned rosters [though most don't adhere to this] but it would be better for relationships and sportsmanship if the other coach/organization was given consideration.
