A couple of tidbits from the January 2015 OHSAA Board of Directors Meeting:

It looks like OHSAA is getting serious about rules violations. There were a couple of hefty fines levied at schools and a coach.

Wellsville High School had a student-athlete on the varsity football team transfer to the school last March and an affidavit of bona fide residence was not originally submitted to the OHSAA. While the student had been participating for the school, it was discovered that the family does not live in the school district and that falsified information regarding the residence had been provided. Therefore, in accordance with Bylaw 4-1-2, Eligibility (falsified information), the Commissioner's Office has ruled the student ineligible for interscholastic athletics at Wellsville or any other member high school for one year beginning December 8, 2014, and, in accordance with Bylaw 10-2-1, Forfeitures - Exception, no contests in which the ineligible student participated shall be forfeited due to the falsified information. Additionally, it has been determined that the school failed to adhere to Bylaw 3-1-1, Administrative Responsibility and Institutional Control, and, in accordance with Bylaw 11, Penalties, the Commissioner's Office has placed Wellsville on probation until August 1, 2016, ordered the school's principal and athletic administrator to attend the OHSAA New Administrators Workshop next August and fined the school $10,000, with $2,500 of that amount returned to the school should there be no additional eligibility violations through the probationary period.

Proctorville Fairland High School's head football coach has been found in violation of Bylaws 4-9-2 and 4-9-4, Recruiting. The students in question are in violation of Recruiting Bylaw 4-9-7, and, in accordance with Bylaw 11, Penalties, are ineligible for up to one year at Fairland. In addition, in accordance with Bylaw 11, Penalties, the Commissioner's Office has required the school to submit a corrective action plan (which was received and accepted on November 19); has placed the school on probation for two years; has fined the school $2,500 ($500 of which will be reimbursed if the school completes the requirements for the Harold A. Meyer Sportsmanship Award for the 2014-15 school year), and required the school's athletic administrator to attend next fall's OHSAA New Administrators Workshop.
