Torre, did not call most of the yankees games. LOL Yes - He may send in situational play but trust me the posada is doing most of the pitch calling alond with the pitchers input.

Now lets get back to Softball......

Even thou speakingof my beloved Yankees could go on for ever!

Will the new time limits on delivering pitches change anyones opinion on this matter? Coach has to decide on the pitch, relay to the catcher, relay to the pitcher. I have seen some coaches take a long time to consult their charts, and decide on what to throw. Just a question?

i think you should start working on calling pitches w/ your catchers...if you have a smart enough catcher she can pick it up right away and start calling an inning or two...i mean even if in the winter your team plays w/ an indoor league...let her call pitches there...its great work...and i doesn't really matter b/c isn't that the reason most travel teams play winter ball,to get some PRACTICE!!!im 14 ive been a catcher since i started playing...im very smart behind the plate...im the younger sister of a All Ohio catcher and i know the game very well...this past winter my travel team played in an indoor highschool league....we won every game....this coming from a bunch of 7th and 8th graders beating older highschool teams....and you wanna know something i called every single one of those games.......but i think in order to be good at calling pitches you have to have great communication w/ your pitchers and you have to know them like the back of your hand....well this is just another way i feel...don't hate the game hate the player! haha.......

p.s....a lot of times...i think coaches may just not think their girls can handle it...or are smart enough game wise?

The solution depends upon your catcher. ?If a catcher has game sense, she can call pitches, make defensive decisions, etc. ?If she doesn't have game sense enough to do that, she probably shouldn't be playing such an important position to begin with. ?I started learning where to call pitch locations when I was ten years old, and by the time I was fourteen I could call locations, different pitches, and defensive plays.

As for a mother/father spending time and money on pitching lessons, etc, what are you paying for if your girl isn't learning how to play the game? ?Who cares if she can throw a certain pitch if she doesn't know why she's throwing it? ?That seems to me like teaching someone to breathe but not telling them why they have to do it.

And. ?A coach is just as liable to make a mistake with a call as a player is. ?A coach often doesn't have the perspective a catcher does, as a catcher can see the whole field, and more importantly, where the batter is in relation to the plate, etc.

That's just my bit.

This should get some response but I will not say NEVER. but she should start calling pitching the same time she starts calling for a bunt for her offensive players to but down and she is coaching the team.
I still have not seen one post concerning where you want the batter to hit the ball. ?Right side of field, fly ball, left side and ect. ?A catcher and pitcher in most all cases are thinking strike out. The first thing I tell any pitcher that I am working with is her job is not to strike out batters. ?Her job is to make the batter hit her pitch if it is hit at all. ?
I know some disagree but in my HMO the magager or coach is managing the game both offense and defense. ?I am not an expert but I think it is just that simple. ?Catchers already have so much to concentrate on and do without adding more responsibility. ? By the coach calling it, if it is a grand slam, then the pitcher or catcher can still look the team in the eye and say ?the coach called it. ?Of course the pitch must be in the location and type of pitch the coach called, otherwise it is the pitcher or cathers' fault. ?

This should get some reponses and everyone has opinions. ?So go at it. ?

I basially agree with you a1sdad. The coach is responsible for strategy and the players are responsible for execution of the strategy. There are probably some catchers out there who can do this more effectively than their coaches, but I honestly don't believe most can at the high school aged level and below.

This is my first post, but I have been following for about a year.

I have been struggling with teaching my catchers to call a game. ?It seems to me that even though they are smart players, they just don't process the situations well enough to make good decisions. ?Or,....I am not giving them enough leash for them to learn, by letting them make mistakes. ?Either way, I am interested in whether any other of you coaches are doing this, and if you are, what works. ?Are the girls too young for me to be trying this with? ?I coach 14 year olds. ?I have 2 catchers that I have been coaching for 3 years. ? I tried to let them call a game each at the end of last season, but ended up back on the bucket in a couple of innings (in both games). ?In general, I think it is important for the catcher to understand the game at that level, but I have had no success teaching it so far.
? ? ?
?U.B. are you a catching coach ?

NEVER...

Too much for a girl to know.....Coaches have a hard time calling games and then throw ALL that onto a 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 year old player.

They should be allowed to call pitches.....on a limited basis...So they do get practice.

This subject is going to get many opinions. One thing I did notice, that Jamie, Rich, & Shayne all posted the same Opinions. I don't know everyone on this site, but these three are Excellent Head Coaches, that I would take advice from .

Lets see, indoor cup this year in the Netherlands, tied eventual winners Dutch team 0-0, one game her pitcher strikes out 13, her pitcher gets tournament MVP over winning team players and Olympic team pitchers, Must have been calling something right....

Just one instance of success when you let them start calling them at a young age....

You are taking one isolated situation and she may have just started calling own pitches who knows. I just think come Sunday managers need to manage and kids play the game.
