Another reported theft at Spano

RamSftbl,

In a blowout game, I would find it odd for an umpire to tell you you can't do that- then turn around and suggest other ways that you could hasten the game! :-?

Since leaving a base early in a slaughter game gives your team no advantage, nor presents a disadvantage to the other team, I don't see this as violating the intent or purpose of the rules.

But that is a judgment call and judgment will vary from person to person.

Very Curious Am I

So I am getting from all of this that the umpire in all of this never noticed that the ball was not left on the field of play???? Interesting in deed!

I respect all of your comments, can we prove it......no other then we were watching signs given to the catcher and they did change and other then what our third base coach heard about making plays (or not) to first on bunts and comments from parents to ours of apology.
So no we cannot prove it, just simply coincedence.

As for the umpire, and I respected her for what she said, she said it would be insulting to the other team defensively and might be perceived as negative or insulting and suggested an alternative. We respected her requested and got the same results, BUT SHE AS A UMPIRE WAS IN CONTROL and we respected and did as she requested. Did it matter or did the parents of that team feel any different? I don't know but I did as she asked. In this case the umpire seemed more intimidated by the situation then anything, and I cannot blame him. six to eight coaches losing their kool and he is only one guy.

Forgive me if this has been said I did not read all the posts and I apoligize... But how much money did the winning team and coach make on this game... ::) ::) I thought winter ball was about getting these young ladies some needed work on there game.... To "stall" and play these kinds of games IMO are just classless... Let the girls play and learn and dang it can we as coaches start teaching that winning is not the only thing in the world ... a trophy is great to have when you win a tourmement but class will follow you for life... JUST MY HONEST OPINION

My kid was the one that got "plunked", and yes she is ok, but it was OBVIOUS that the other coach wanted his pitcher to hit her to slow the game down. I agree with both of our coaches, that maybe we sunk to their level to speed the game up, but that was a cheap shot to lay on a 13 year old girl. My kid's tough, but that's not the point.

We played the Pittsburgh Spirit "Gold" earlier that night to a 0-0 tie, and they are a class team. I hope we see "this other team" this summer. We'll beat them on the field and this will all be forgotten. I'm excited about the Valley Extreme "Pierce" team that we're a part of. My daughter an I both are looking forward to playing outside this summer.

Bill,

Glad to hear your DD is ok, when I read this the first time I got a chuckle when they said the girl that got hit, got right up and ran to first base. I was thinking "way to go" She has a little Kirk Gibson in her lol, he use to say if you hit me I wont charge the mound but I will steal second the first chance I get lol.

I am not sure how I would have reacted if my DD at 13 was intentionally hit by a pitcher who had been told to do so by an adult, I believe from what I have read you handled it correctly and kudos to you and your tough DD.

Just an outsider taking this all in but this statement leaves the reader assuming it was the mentioned team who is being accused of the actions described in the topic.

I hope we see the Spirit "Black" this summer. We'll beat them on the field and this will all be forgotten.

Im not criticizing the post....just wanted the poster to be aware that is how it would be interpreted by readers. I havent seen the team opposing the Extreme mentioned except for this reference.

It wasn't hard to figure out the situation really. All that had to be done was to go and look at the Spano dome schedule posted in the indoor tourney section and look at the VE last game opponent of Sat. night. I am sure most of the long term OFC'ers had already diagnosed the situation.

The "revert back" rule is the DEVIL. Take that away, and a lot (not all) of this goes away. There will be stalling in minor ways when a game gets late and one team makes that choice, but it seems to get "circus" like in the revert back environment. "Finish the inning" rules will help with a lot of it.

I was really looking forward to the upcoming travel season until I read this post. As parents, we hope our dd coaches will be role models. My dd is a pitcher and I don't think it would ever cross her mind to take the game ball off the field for any reason. 3rd out, drop the ball on the mound and run off the field-automatic since 9 years old. Plunk a batter on purpose- I don't think so. Use stall tactics-only if told how to do this. These tactics are taught to these girls. I may be naive about this but I don't think it just comes to them naturally. Teach them to play the game until game over, be a courtious loser or winner, on to next game!

I'll add my two cents. We were in the situation in the championship game of a tie. Ice Richards winning with 1 more player on 3rd base. The coach there showed the utmost class in lobbying for extra time. Not just him, but his entire organization. We lost...period. Can it ever come back to the players on the field? It sure as heck should. Why didn't the girls score the runs in the early innings, rather than the later innings. Whether they play 4,5,6, or 7 innings, they are up to bat with the ability to score runs. Our coach took this tournament as a way to play ball in February. We know it's not outside. How many people said this weekend "That girl got Domered". It is inside ball. Other than the time limit (which has been beaten up), it was good to play.

On a brighter side.........It was good to see all the faces that we see through the summer. Didn't get to see everyone though

there should be no time limits anytime. The reason? The only reason there are time limits on some games is to make more money. Period. These tourneys, even some in the summer, take too many teams so more money can be made. We all accept it and attend the tourneys regardless because what are our choices? But its simply about money. And at this level, thats just wrong. Again, a better solution, if making the most money possible has to be a goal, or even if making enough money to cover the costs of running the tourney is needed, is to simply take less teams and just charge everyone else $20-$30 moreor whatever it takes to get to the same point financially. How hard is that to accomplish? How many teams wouldn't pay $20-30 more to avoid all this time limit/revert crap? And to say that you don't want teams to miss out on getting into a tourney by limiting the number of teams you take is bogus also. Sooner or later, if a tournament is popular enough, you'll have to turn away teams in any case. As always, in life also, quality is better than quantity. It takes away from the game the way it was supposed to be played. And that is not something that anyone has a right to do. Invent your own game and put these bogus rules in. Call it whatever. Austrailian Rules Fastpitch, Fasttrack Fastpitch, Half Pipe Softball, or whatever. But don't take a game, whose origins(baseball) are well over 100 years old, that was never meant to be timed, and change it simply to make money. Its wrong. No debating it. It's wrong. Though I'm sure someone out there will debate it.

Make the game time end 5-10 minutes earlier, then finish the inning. Then the overall daily schedule should then stay true. Games that need the extra time will have it. The ones that were over anyway won't.

Just want to present a little bit of the other side of time limit games. Just finished an indoor league for the high school team. Had a "tournament" to finish the season. Without going into the specifics of the modified rules since we agreed to them up front when we entered the tournament this tournament did not have any tie breakers or revert back rules. Our team had a 7 am game, after winning, played at approx. 10. am. Next game wasn't scheduled until 3:45. In between they had 3 games go over the time limit due to playing off of ties. Our 3:45 game started an hour late. Building was crowded, not extra space to do anyting but sit. Very tempting to get up and leave. Yes, the teams ahead of us got to determine a true winner, and if I were in that situation would want the same. When you are outside, at least you can find something fun/productive to do to with the team. Inside very few options.
By the way this has nothing to do with Spano dome, different place altogether.

I like the Spano. I spend alot of time there. The indoor facilities have been a great resource for the kids to play through the winter, but there's no arguing that playing outdoors is better, in about every way possible.
