I think the ball should have been dead. But i have a question for you emily#3. Was the umpire old or young because i played today and one of the umpires was old and missed an out that would have helped my team a lot!! Old umpires sometimes miss a lot of things that can be important in a game.

It really depends if the bat hit the ball or did the ball hit the bat? If the bunt is down and the bat was thrown into the ball should be dead ball. If the bat is dropped and the ball with back spin comes back and hits the bat could be ruled live ball.

At least that is how I understand it.

bunt is down toward's first. bat is tossed in front of the ball, ball then hit's the bat and change's direction toward's 3rd

Emily: The thing I am most concerned about is your English.

Toward's? "Toward" is the correct word. "Towards" is slang and "toward's" (which you wrote) is not a word and it is clearly not a possessive.

"Hit's" is not a word, either-- unless there's a girl on your team whose name is "Hit." In that case, the glove lying on the ground could be Hit's glove. The apostrophe, Emily, is used to show possession. "Hits" is the correct word for the sentence you wrote. It is the plural of "hit."

"Change's" is not a word, unless you have a girl on your team whose name is "Change." In that case, the bat nearest the bench could be "Change's" bat. Again, the apostrophe indicates possession. You should have written, "changes." "Changes," in that context, is a verb.

I hope this helped you. Perhaps a little more reading and a little less softball would be a productive course of action.

By the way:

If it is determined that the batter/runner intentionally threw the bat at the rolling ball, then the batter/runner is out.

If the bat is not moving when the ball rolls into it, then the bat is assumed to be part of the field and the play just continues.

If the bat is rolling when it contacts the ball, but has not been intentionally thrown to make contact with the ball, then ball is declared dead (and I believe everybody gets one base).

Thank you PlayedOut08!

We have all been waiting for someone to educate these crazy teenagers with their wild lingo, apostrophes where they shouldn't be and misspellings! ?

I have 2 teenagers that constantly use IDK, BTW, OMG and similar abbreviations in their e-mails, texts and postings! ?So what if they receive A's in their Honors English class! ?What matters is what they write when they are texting friends or making a post on a softball website!

PlayedOut08, you should consider policing all internet websites. ?AOL has some posters in serious need of someone with your expertise!

A pretty good account of the rule, PlayedOut- right up until that last sentence! :)

If the bat is rolling and hits the ball, the batter's "intentions" do not come into play. It is either interference or it is not- and in this case it is! The batter, in this case, can "accidently" interfer.

If interference is ruled, not only is the batter out and the ball imediately dead, but any runners on base must return to their last base occupied at the time of the interference.

Why would the runners get a base if the batter interfered with the ball, intentionally or accidentally?? You might want to pick up a book yourself before you criticize anyone else - a rulebook!!!!! :-?

"Hit's" is not a word,
"Change's" is not a word,

Furthermore, Hit's and Change's are in fact words, they are just incorrectly punctuated.

I think it to be clear to any reasonable person the below quote uses hits and changes as verbs, regardless of the punctuation errors.

"...ball then hit's the bat and change's direction..."

I beg to differ. The apostrophe is part of the word, not a punctuation mark per se. Without the apostrophe, the word, "gym's" is not a possessive indicating that something belongs to the gym. It is a plural, meaning more than one gym. They are two different words. They are not one word punctuated differently. The period at the end of this sentence falls into the category of punctuation.

There are few skills in this world as valuable as the ability to write well. Without it, a person's choices of employment are greatly limited.

In most cases, however, your writing skills have little affect on your ability to land a husband and become a softball mom.

Thank you playedout! The old possessive/contraction decision seems to be a tough one on here. Just wait until the plural/possessive monster comes out! ;)

If you're going to police everyone's English and grammar you will be a busy boy. :D Almost everyone on this site makes mistakes while typing. Better to just leave it to the softball talk. :-X Disrespecting other people on here is not a way to gain their respect. JMHO

Amazing how this subject went from a softball question and turned into of all things, a spelling class. WOW
Maybe these guys should change their names to "Little Professor" or "Grammer rules"

Please don't grade my post. ;D

Why not? I'd give it an A+. I agree with your sentiments wholeheartedly.
